Hilton Downtown Anchorage Hotel

by Leave a Comment

In Anchorage, Alaska, in the United States, at 330 E Street, there is a Hilton Downtown Anchorage Hotel called The Anchorage Hotel. The current hotel building, which was erected as an addition to the old Anchorage Hotel building, opened its doors in 1936. The first Hilton Downtown Anchorage Hotel was constructed by C.B. Wark and was initially a wood-frame building that Frank Reed later transformed into a luxury hotel in 1917. To accommodate more visitors after the Hilton Downtown Anchorage Hotel outgrew its original structure in the 1930s due to Anchorage’s expansion, the Anchorage Hotel Annex was constructed in 1936. The annex, created by E. Ellsworth Seville, was one of Anchorage’s tallest structures at the time and featured a Gothic design.

Warren Harding, Harold L. Ickes, Walt Disney, Wiley Post, and Will Rogers were among the guests of the hotel. The last two stayed there just two days before they perished in an aircraft crash. Additionally, for some of the 1920s and 1930s, artist Sidney Laurence resided in the hotel. At one point, Laurence bartered a picture of Mount McKinley for a year’s rent. The Hilton Downtown Anchorage Hotel’s reputation fell in the 1950s, and the structures suffered from a lack of upkeep. After several ownership changes, Bob and Carolyn Neumann restored the hotel in the late 1980s. The old hotel building was destroyed in the 1960s, and the annex became the Hotel Ronald Lee. The Hilton Downtown Anchorage Hotel was given its old name after being renovated and is currently known as the Historic Anchorage Hotel.
