Review Of Vumbura Plains Camp By An Insider
Vumbura Plains Camp is one of the few places on earth or in Africa where they can view such a staggeringly vast ensemble of captivating creatures. This opulent and cutting-edge camp, which is perched on a gradual slope with a view of the amazing Okavango Delta and beautiful grasslands and woodlands at its back, brilliantly illustrates what Shakespeare called “Africa’s golden delights.” (Though he never visited Africa, Shakespeare was aware of the enthusiasm the continent had generated for many ages; Pliny the Elder wrote, “Always something new from Africa,” some 1500 years before the Bard was born.)
At the point where the huge Okavango River gives up trying to reach the sea and instead falls life-sustainingly into the sands of the Kalahari Desert, game viewing out of Vumbura mixes experiences of the oceanic plains with excursions of the world-unique Delta. According to Frans Lanting, “The [Delta’s] very survival in the middle of the Kalahari is nothing short of amazing… like a dream,” in his elegiac book Okavango: Africa’s Last Eden.
The Vumbura Plains Camp’s lodging
As described by Elspeth Huxley in The Flame Trees of Thika, Vumbura’s two distinct luxury camps are small—each has only seven rooms, two of which are especially family-friendly—yet unusually spacious and brightly airy, raised off the ground, and lavishly windowed for views of the Delta morning, noon, and in “the soft velvet of the [African] night…a warm conservatory whose great dome [is] encrusted with all the diamonds
Every room has a wide, open deck from which to enjoy the brilliance of those heavenly diamonds or observe Delta animals (another great vantage point: their hotel’s revitalizing plunge pool), a complete bath (with a fantastic outdoor shower), an incredibly huge bedroom, and elegantly furnished living areas. The main lounge, dining room, and bar are all unique to each of the two camps and were all created with Vumbura’s signature flare for soft luxury and openness to its beautiful surroundings.

The Vumbura Plains Camp’s activities
Vurumba’s main draw is its diversity of safari experiences, which also reinforce the soul with delectably opulent repose. They spend about half of their game-viewing time in the enchanting waterways and lagoons of the Delta, taking walks or meandering their way on small canoes called mokoros, spotting gamboling hippos, soaring African fish eagles, delicate and rare red lechwe antelopes, alertly lounging, unforgettably Jurassic crocodiles, and delighting in “the sheer surprise of seeing an
The Big Five (lion, leopard, Cape buffalo, rhino, and elephant) are in dramatic residence out on the neighboring plain, together with a plethora of other mammal species, including the critically endangered Cape wild dogs. They will witness several elephants “pacing along as if they had an appointment at the end of the globe,” as the great Isak Dinesen of Out of Africa famously observed, and they will be delighted by warthogs “racing along as if they had an appointment at the end of their snouts.”
First and foremost, watching the Okavango game is usually exciting and fun. It’s also a fantastic chance to put naturalist Loren Eisley’s bold claim to the test. He said that until one sees the reflection of an eye other than a human, one does not meet oneself.
Camp Vumbura Plains Has Been reimagined By Wilderness Safaris.
Wilderness Safaris is getting ready to reopen its Vumbura Plains camp, which is located in the center of Botswana’s Okavango Delta Reserve, following a thorough makeover of both the inside and exterior.
Fourteen new guest suites have been added to Vumbura Plains as part of the renovation. Each suite features nicely furnished bedroom quarters, indoor and outdoor showers, and an outside decked sitting space with a private plunge pool.
The 148,230-acre Vumbura Plains Private Wilderness Area, which surrounds the camp, is leased from five nearby villages as part of the Okavango Community Trust in keeping with Wilderness Safari’s fundamental philosophy of providing purpose-driven safari experiences. Through this relationship, local communities are guaranteed to immediately profit from safari tourism in the region and to actively influence the experiences on offer.
The renovation of Vumbura Plains has been focused on exhibiting distinctive design elements and regional artisan traditions as part of this continuous endeavor. The revamped design, carried out by Cate Simpson of Reflecting Africa, has been painstakingly envisioned to produce a true Okavango experience, with local artisans invited on board to assist in producing the finished product.
Despite the challenges of the epidemic, they are thrilled to have finished this substantial refurbishment of one of their flagship sites in a fantastic time, says Kim Nixon, MD of Wilderness Safaris. “Vumbura exemplifies the tranquil beauty and year-round wildlife diversity of this iconic Delta destination, and I have no doubt that the refurbished camp will continue to thrill guests and give life-changing excursions in this wonderful natural area,” the author said.
The culinary staff at Vumbura has also developed a brand-new menu that is more directly in line with regional cuisine to go along with the unveiling of the updated camp. With the goal of reducing food airmiles and creating a new source of income for the local community, the menu is concentrated on seasonal ingredients bought from nearby farmers.
Although the camp has a fresh new look, the prospects for animal viewing at Vumbura Plains remain as fantastic as ever. Visitors are welcome to partake in day and night safari adventures on land and in the water, as well as helicopter excursions and hot-air balloon rides. The Okavango Delta is home to some of the world’s most diverse wildlife, including painted dogs, cheetahs, elephants, and lions.
The renovation of Vumbura comes after the sibling resorts DumaTau and Little DumaTau, which were also reopened last year, had a recent redesign. These two opulent safari camps were thoughtfully created, like Vumbura, to honor and highlight their surrounding environments.
The Reasons Why They Suggest Vumbura Plains Camp
“The animal sightings here are some of the best in Africa and are located on one of the best concessions in the Okavango Delta. The camp also offers water activities all year round, which is really unusual, and the leopard and big cat sightings are fantastic. A library, hanging loungers, strewn pillows, sunken sitting, and tree stump tables give this camp a trendy seal of approval.
This small camp radiates elegance amid the wild. The Moremi Game Reserve is bordered by the enviable location of a private concession, which is tucked away in the far north of the Okavango Delta.
Vumbura Plains Camp is the ideal place to view almost all of the animals that live in the Okavango Delta biome because it encompasses a variety of habitats. The camp, which is opulently located in a private concession, is home to two distinct 7-room satellite camps that are elevated off the ground on wooden decks. Each large room has a bedroom, a lounge, a shower, a plunge pool, a complete en-suite bathroom, and a cozy “sala.” Each room also offers breathtaking views of the magnificent floodplains of the Okavango Delta.
The Vumbura Plains Camp offers both land and water activities close to the outermost open savannahs of the Okavango and boasts picturesque streams in its vicinity. Game watching is the main draw here, but birding, walks, fishing, mokoro rides, and boat rides round out the experience and provide you with a variety of views of an African safari. On the same drive, you might even have the uncommon opportunity to view the crimson Lechwe and Sable antelope.

The camp is 40 minutes drive away from the nearby airport. The Okavango Delta’s 30,000-hectare Vumbura Concession is where it is located.
Facilities & Accommodations at Wilderness Vumbura Plains Camp:
North Camp and South Camp, the two camps that makeup Wilderness Vumbura Plains, both have undergone considerable improvements. The spacious, airy apartments now have renovated doors and windows, as well as furniture and interiors that have been improved to bring nature inside, taking advantage of the tranquil surroundings. The waterlilies of the Okavango Delta served as inspiration for the renovated interiors, and the camps now have a modern vibe thanks to create patterns and an invigorating blue-green Okavango color scheme.
Seven guest tents are located in each of the North and South camps; they are all elevated above the ground on wooden decking and connected by wooden walkways. These thatched-roofed tents are some of the largest ones they’ve seen while on safari in Africa! Each has two levels. A large double bed or twin bed with mosquito netting around them is located on the upper level, along with a shelf unit with plenty of storage and a spot for lighting. This floor also houses the en suite bathroom, which has an open-concept shower, a flush toilet, and twin washbasins. The lounge area, which features cozy seats and a few stands for books and drinks, is accessible via a few steps. There are also plug points, a tea and coffee station, a minibar, a safe, a hairdryer, dressing robes, and a variety of free toiletries available in the rooms. Doors leading from the bedroom area open onto a veranda, which features a plunge pool, sun loungers, a covered sala for private dining, and of course, breathtaking views.
The same wooden walks lead from the guest tents to the common buildings at Wilderness Vumbura Plains. Both camps contain an open-sided lounge space with L-shaped seating made of colorfully cushioned furniture and a few coffee tables nearby. These areas are close to the fully equipped bar, where you may assist yourself with a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Even a coffee maker is included. The dining area is located on the opposite side of the bar and is equipped with stylish wooden tables and chairs for delectable brunches, energizing afternoon teas, and opulent three-course dinners. The food is one of the best parts of staying at Wilderness Vumbura Plains! The cuisine at the camp honors the excellent seasonal and local ingredients of the area, its customs, and the camp’s collaboration with the local farmers and suppliers in keeping with the “low footprint” ethos.
The spacious porch is beyond the dining area, where you can gaze at breathtaking views! From the veranda, steps lead down to a fire pit that is encircled by more comfortable seating and makes for a great gathering place for sharing safari tales. Throughout your visit, friendly staff members are available to make you feel at home, and for the ultimate relaxation, you can ask for a massage in your private sala. You’ll find contributions from and homages to the neighborhood and its customs throughout the camp. The furnishings, artwork, and furniture were largely made by regional artisans. When you arrive, be sure to look high at the light fixtures since some of them are constructed from staff-woven baskets and others from old-fashioned fish traps.
