Botswana’s Mombo And Little Mombo Safari Camp
Mombo Camp, Okavango Delta, Botswana
The Wilderness Safaris’ main site, Botswana Mombo Camp, is situated in the middle of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. The exceptional animal concentration and interactions at Mombo Camp, along with its distinctive approach to luxury hospitality, have earned it a reputation as the best safari camp in Africa.
Okavango Inspiration at its Best
The nine spacious tented suites, which include a family room, are perched above the ground so that the veranda and pergola can take advantage of the vistas. In order to accommodate a pool deck with a private plunge pool, each tent has been built in the exact same location as its predecessor, with a modest increase in size out into the floodplain. The Wilderness’ interior features include a sitting area, a bedroom and bathroom that are separate, indoor and outdoor showers, and a bathtub with copper and brass accents.
Sense of the Present and the Past
When finished, Mombo is a camp that seamlessly blends into its surroundings, capturing its character, essence, and mood. In Mombo, guests will notice a colonial undercurrent with items like sherry decanters, military chests, brass lamps, and writing desks, along with a naturalist feel created by wicker furniture, reed blinds, porcupine lampshades, Kuba and Show cloths, and unique inspirations like pygmy beds from the Congo that have been turned into coffee tables! The end result is a unique fusion of the old and new that enhances the diversity of Mombo’s habitat and deftly satisfies every extravagant need.
Little Mombo Camp, Okavango Delta, Botswana
Little Mombo is Mombo Camp’s smaller, more personal sister camp. Together with Mombo, Little Mombo is known around the world as “the Place of Plenty,” drawing a wide diversity of wildlife to its site on Chief’s Island within the Moremi Game Reserve.
Exclusiveness & Room
Little Mombo is Mombo Camp’s smaller, more personal sister camp. Although the rooms are equally as large and luxurious as Mombo Camp, they are more exclusive and peaceful because there are only four rooms in a superb common area. The rooms themselves are constructed in the exact same manner as Mombo Camp, with expansive, opulent tents that look out over the floodplains, large four-poster beds, restrooms with showers outdoors, and private sales for midday naps.
A Special Camp for You
Little Mombo is a more compact, more personal version of its sister camp, Mombo, with only four tents nestled away on the opposite side of the same island. The camp is connected to Mombo Camp by a high boardwalk and is built beneath a shaded canopy of jackalberry and sausage trees, overlooking a floodplain frequented by herds of herbivores (and their predators). The camp has its own amenities, including a dining room, boma, kitchen, lounge, and pool. Little Mombo would be a fantastic location to reserve privately for that ideal family vacation.

Nine opulent tents at Mombo Camp Okavango, each with an en suite bathroom and plenty of space, are located beneath the camp’s big, leafy trees. The tents are elevated above the ground and offer breathtaking views. These opulent tents include a lengthy verandah, internal showers, and outdoor showers. When Should One Visit Mombo Camp, Botswana?
Best Safaris for Wildlife
When is the great time of year to visit Mombo to see the most wildlife? This is a question we are asked frequently. There are advantages to every season and time of year, so there is no way to definitively answer this question. Although the Moremi Game Reserve’s peak months are July and October, Mombo, Little Mombo, and the surrounding area routinely offer breathtaking game viewing all year long. One of the key causes is that most of the wildlife in the vicinity of Mombo is a resident, freely wandering the Moremi concession but infrequently venturing outside of it. Predators, such as the lion and leopard that have made Mombo so well-known, are year-round visitors to the Mombo Concession and are well-known to the guides at the camp. It is true that Mombo offers some of the best safaris in Africa throughout the entire year. All of the predator concentrations and plains game vary, although not to a great extent that is obvious. If I were an animal, this is where I’d live, as one client once exclaimed. And in fact, the majority of games truly have no cause to leave; that much is true.
Weather
Botswana has a subtropical climate, which features huge temperature swings between day and night and little annual precipitation. The hottest months are September and October, with a high temperature of over 40 degrees Celsius in October. The first rains of the year begin to fall around this time of year and last through the end of March before ceasing altogether. It is recommended to visit the great migration during the rain in the Serengeti months of January and February if you’re seeking the best safari in Africa. Being surrounded by millions of wildebeest during a Tanzania safari in the southern Serengeti plains is an amazing experience. The finest time of year to visit the country is between May and October when the Delta is flooded, the weather is ideal, and game viewing is at its best. However, keep in mind that you won’t simply be visiting Mombo during this period. If you look at April and May, you can get cheaper rates and have just as wonderful of a Delta experience as you would during peak season, when you pay twice as much. Because of the evident habitat change and all the young that emerge at the first drop of rain, November and December are also fantastic months to go on safari.
Why You Should Visit Botswana Mombo Camp & Activities?
The renowned Botswana Mombo Camp is situated in the Mombo Concession in the heart of the Okavango Delta, near the northern edge of Chief’s Island. From the moment the staff begins their swinging welcome sounds, Mombo promises a memorable safari. It is built among enormous shady trees on the edge of a beautiful floodplain. With Mombo Camp being in the heart of the expansive Moremi Game Reserve, you can easily watch beautiful animals while relaxing on your own verandah with a pair of binoculars. After a safari excursion, the bartender makes sure your glass stays full while you relax and take in the ever-changing sky above Africa’s Okavango Delta. He has a severe aversion to empty glasses. Safari tales are swapped with other diners while the cook whips up a fancy dinner, or you can look up the colorful birds you saw today in your wildlife guidebook while perusing through it. What will the day after bring? Mombo, which in the Botswana language means “place of plenty,” will become clear to you once you go on a safari activity. This refers to the enormous concentrations of plains game and predators that can be seen, including all the big cats, including the frequently sighted lion, as well as leopard, cheetah, and spotted hyena. Buffalo, elephant, white rhino, giraffe, blue wildebeest, Burchell’s zebra, and numerous other animals will also be present in great herds.
Eighteen people can stay in nine opulent tents. The tents are roomy and come in twin or double sizes. They offer en-suite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers, a separate flush toilet, bathroom supplies, a mosquito net, and a fan. The tents are roomy and elegantly constructed: rural, serene, and modern. Game viewing begins in the morning in complete privacy with a hot cup of coffee or tea in a sala with glass doors that open onto a balcony. Watch the dew evaporate off the floodplains, listen to the birds as they begin to chirp, or observe hippos taking a morning bath. You may access the main living areas via wooded paths. On a high balcony covered in thatch, the dining room, lounge, and bar offer excellent views. A separate reading area with many cozy nooks, a boma for star-gazing evenings, and a private lounge for romantic dinners, small parties, or honeymooners are all available. Two plunge pools are available for welcome refreshment or to work up a sweat in the gym while siestaing. Do you feel like unwinding more? For some African pampering, a wide variety of massage therapies are offered.
Things To Do At Botswana Mombo Camp
Even though there is occasional water in the region, game drives are the only activity offered at Mombo Camp because the Moremi Game Reserve is known as one of the great places in Africa to see wildlife. Twenty minutes from camp, the serene “Hippo hides” provides good opportunities for bird- and animal-watching. On drives, you can use binoculars, get some rest, read a book for information, and sit in the “window” for the best views. At Mombo Camp, all of the guides are knowledgeable, considerate, and have a sense of humor. A flexible schedule for game activities is offered to fulfill your expectations. Because ultimately, in addition to the opulent lodging, first-rate dining, and fantastic game viewing, what really distinguishes Mombo is the superior service. F.A.Q.
Set the stage
Where hundreds of animals can be seen at the border of a vast feeding plain, there are two camps in this story. The main Mombo contains nine tents while Little Mombo has just three, but what tents they are—each is nearly as large and engulfing as a circus big-top. A walkway connects the two camps. Near the gin bar, where everyone congregates after rolling back in their individual Land Cruisers, 1920s-style chandeliers hang overhead.
What is the background of Mombo Camp?
The premier ecotourism company in southern Africa, Wilderness Safaris, was established back in 1983. It has an impressive network of camps around, including Rwanda, South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana, one of the greatest beautiful places on earth to watch animals. Nick Plewman, an architect, and Caline Williams-Wynn, a designer, have renovated Mombo, a more than 30-year-old building in the Moremi Game Reserve. They have incorporated vintage items like Chesterfield sofas and antique brasses with handmade ceramics and regional fabrics; look for the Pygmy beds from the Congo that have been transformed into coffee tables. The former camp’s reclaimed wood was used to build the boma, which you may remember from past visits. Mombo has a solid reputation for protecting rhinos, both white and black, and has a wall of fame honoring each animal that has been saved thanks to patron sponsorship.
What can they anticipate from the space?
The architecture gracefully combines elements of colonial, Art Deco, and modern styles. 11 of the 12 units in Mombo and Little Mombo (which are on the same property and are referred to collectively as Mombo) are the same; the 12th was added as a family unit and came with an extra bathroom and bedroom as well as an extra-large terrace, making it ideal for vacationers of different generations. The fact that your schedule is set up to ensure that you spend as little time in your nicely constructed units is almost a shame. Every area of the tent offers views of the savannah, even the bathroom mirrors, which let you watch giraffes and zebras while blow-drying your hair. Nothing surpasses the plunge pools on the terraces, which are so near to the savannah that elephants occasionally mistake them for drinking establishments. The little salons with complete bar carts and leather sofas are a lot of fun.
How about the meals and beverages?
The menus feature a smart selection of food that will appeal to just about anybody rather than veering into the gourmet territory; there are lots of plates of pasta, wraps, and grilled meats. The food is excellent (cooked over traditional coals). Harissa chicken skewers, a wild-mushroom lasagna, and ostrich and apricot tagine. There is a pizza oven as well. At the bar, there are bottles from London and Mexico alongside South African gins and mezcals. You do have a menu to choose from, unlike other camps, and dining is not shared. It is simple to set up in-tent eating, and since the tent is so lovely, doing so is a pleasant way to spend more time there.
What role does it play in the area?
Probably the best method to evaluate a safari camp is by the tales you bring back with you after your trip. By that standard, this should be the safari you go on once in your life. Our wildlife drives were outstanding. It was more about activity than volume. After every trip, we would return with tales of what we had witnessed, such as a pride of lions plotting and then successfully completing a kill, a sick mother leopard feeding her cub an impala, and a honey bird pointing us in the direction of a beehive.
Any comments about the service?
The employees are the kind who will educate you all day long and then chat until the whiskey has been consumed in its entirety and the fire has been reduced to embers. Our guide, O.B., elevated the commonplace into something unforgettable. He liked the jungle so much that he became almost as delighted when he came across a pride of lions or several cheetahs as the tourists would be. There were lengthy, educational conversations with Tsebo back at camp. Such a wonderful representative of the camp and Botswana.
What did we miss?
If necessary, plans can be arranged to visit nearby schools and villages, and some seasons are suitable for canoe safaris.
Worth it—why is that?
Watching sporting events is among the best on the continent. Due to the position, you can witness elephants, giraffes, and zebras without ever leaving the plunge pool. If you are considering Mombo but are hesitant, simply go for it.
