History

Steamboat’s history dates back to the 14th century when nomadic Ute Indians spent their summers in the Yampa Valley. Until the 1800s, when early immigrants arrived in the valley, the Utes wandered the vast lands alone.
In 1865, three French fur trappers trekking the Yampa River were reportedly christened Steamboat Springs. One individual heard what sounded like a paddle-wheel boat chugging. The guys raced toward the sound, which was a bubbling mineral spring. Steamboat’s various springs are still renowned as a source of relaxation and are reputed to offer therapeutic effects.
James Harvey Crawford, who found the Yampa Valley location while on a hunting expedition along the Gore Trail in the autumn of 1874, was Steamboat Springs’ first permanent inhabitant. Crawford secured a homestead claim on this voyage and relocated to Steamboat Springs with his family the following year.
Other families moved to the region after hearing about the beauty of the Yampa Valley. Perry A. Burgess and William H. Walton, both from Missouri, were among the early pioneers. Along with Crawford and a few others, they enacted preemption legislation for the town of Steamboat Springs. Each acquired 160 acres and filed a homestead, resulting in the formation of the first village.
H. H. Suttle established a sawmill in the summer of 1883, which was the first significant driver for expansion. Further community growth was secured with the ability to provide wood for houses and shops. The Steamboat Pilot newspaper was one of the earliest to operate, publishing its inaugural issue on July 31, 1885. The local commercial center had a general shop, post office, and hotel by 1886.
