A Short History
Thomas and Ann Drayton landed on a boat from Barbados in 1676, just a few years after the Charles Town colony was created and Magnolia Plantation was built. Rice was the principal crop grown on the estate for nearly a century. When Thomas Drayton, the plantation’s great-grandson, died in 1825, he left the estate to his grandsons, Thomas and John Grimke. When Thomas Grimke was killed in a hunting accident at 22, John Grimke Drayton found himself the proprietor of a wealthy South Carolina plantation.
Drayton contracted tuberculosis in the 1830s. He took time off from his duties as a minister to rehabilitate at Magnolia Plantation. French botanist Andre Michaux introduced the Asian azalea to the United States decades before. Thomas Drayton became the first person to grow the azalea bush in a garden while on his plantation.
When the Civil War ultimately ended the Southern plantation economy, places like Magnolia Plantation were forced to find a new source of income. The plantation was initially strip-mined for precious phosphates in the soil, but that venture lasted only a short time. Magnolia Plantation became one of the country’s oldest botanical gardens when the natural gardens Drayton had meticulously cultivated were opened to the public for the first time in 1870.
Visit the Plantation House
The Magnolia Plantation’s Main home is not a classic Southern plantation nor the original plantation home. It was built just before the Revolutionary War in nearby Summerville and relocated to its current position sometime after the Civil War.
Guided tours of the house last 45 minutes and include the history of the Draytons and Magnolia Plantation. The term covers most of the wonderfully adorned home, which appears much as it was in the 1800s. The best part of the tour was when the guide would stop and say, “This piece of furniture belonged to a Drayton!”
The History Room, located on the main floor of the Main House, is a small museum featuring historical images, artwork, and information about the plantation. The Gift Shop comprises small rooms containing locally manufactured arts and crafts, clothes, and baked products.
