We’re the only two who ventured out on a pre-dawn, two-mile bike ride to the beach on this enormous Georgia barrier island with very few visitors. And we have seven miles of stunningly gorgeous, comprehensive beach all to ourselves – shared with the millions of birds, amphibians, shelled critters, and deer that call this island home. We’ve arrived on Little St. Simons Island.
It’s our first morning here, and we’re in awe. Little St Si ons is essentially undeveloped, save for a small 20-acre cluster of ancient buildings reserved for guests, scattered historical remains of buildings, a wrecked tugboat, and a few other structures. Since 1760, the Island has been privately owned.

It is home to an incredible diversity of birds and wildlife. Approximately 300 species of birds call this place home, earning it a well-deserved reputation among bird watchers. The coastal forest is dominated by gnarly-branched live oak trees coated with Spanish moss tendrils.
Various species live in grassy salt marshes, an ever-changing ecosystem that ebbs and flows with the tides. The channels, rivers, and ocean are home to fish, amphibians, and reptiles. Life abounds on land, water, and the forest canopy. The Is and’s naturalists meet with guests at breakfast daily; chalkboard planned activities and expeditions based on guest interest and the Island’s ever-changing wildlife activity, weather, and tide schedules.

Pre-dawn bike rides to the beach to watch the sunrise—Kaya ing with our fellow visitors and a naturalist crew. I am taking a skiff boat class and exploring Mosquito Creek by Siff. A safari-style truck trip to the Island’s north end, where you’ll see thousands of endangered seabirds, a swarm of young alligators, and stunning vistas from the Island’s shell-covered northern beach.
Long hikes on the vast, distant beaches yielded dozens of unbroken sand dollars, stunning tumbling shells, and giant, domed horseshoe crab shells. Dolphin sightings in tidal streams. An in-depth look at the astonishingly diverse population of native snakes. The discovery of loggerhead sea turtle nests on the beach. An after-dinner excursion guided by a naturalist in search of owls in the Island’s tree canopy. They were getting to know the very knowledgeable and kind naturalist staff during our stay: Stacia, Bayard, Andrew, and Eric.
Meal times were one of the trip’s unexpected joys.
The kitchen’s skill is exceptional; daily menus change with the seasons, the catch of the day, and the availability of local products. The kitchen offered meal after meal of expertly made dishes served family style to three huge wooden tables in the Island’s wood-clad medieval hunting lodge, led by the ultra-talented Executive Chef Ulfet Ralph. The restaurant was attentive to our requests for pescatarian and vegetarian menus. One of the most excellent seafood dishes we’ve ever had was a shrimp dish with garlic and herbs served for supper one night.
Aside from the food, the conversation with our fellow guests was an unexpected pleasure of meal times. Their ages and life experiences were as varied as the Islan’s ecology: Georgia natives, California honeymooners, native New Yorkers, and a couple from South Carolina. What we all had in common was a feeling of adventure, development ping, awe, and love for the Island we were temporarily calling home and anecdotes from our daily lives. We made new friends, told tales, laughed a lot, spoke about our recent adventures and favorite books, and passed the enormous family-style serving dishes of incredibly delicious food around.
