The ski slope at Red Lodge Mountain Resort has a lengthy history, dating back to 1960. Above all, we are a down-to-earth ski region that values skiing over flair and glam.

They began as a local, enthusiastic ski club and have grown into a nationwide resort attracting visitors and families. From beginners on Miami Beach to intermediates skiing Lazy M (our two 12-mile flagship run) to specialists seeking a challenge in the double black diamond chutes of Cole Creek, The Mountain has something for everyone.

Not to mention the stunning views of five mountain ranges spanning Montana and Wyoming.

Review

Red Lodge is precisely the area we’re searching for, so we’ve gone to lengths to take on a project like this. They would never have gone there if it hadn’t been for The Project. That would have been a shame because this was one of the most enjoyable spots they had recently skied. They can only give it three stars because it was the most “fun” we’ve had skiing in all these fantastic resorts.

The City

Red Lodge is an old-west town with everything on one main street clustered around a few blocks. You stay and walk around town because driving is only necessary if you go skiing. The ski slope is within a 6-mile drive from downtown.

They slept in the Pollard Hotel, a historic hotel in the heart of the central commercial district. It was adequate but less lovely than the Windsor Hotel in Del Norte, Colorado, where they had stayed the previous year.

Snowfall posed a challenge

They went skiing in Red Lodge around Christmas break, so it was early in the season, and only some things were open. Two high-speed quads have yet to open, so only the old slow lifts are in use. Surprisingly, the two quads serve locations that do not have snowmaking. Due to a lack of snowfall the season before the visit, they had yet to open. Red Lodge claims 500 acres of snowmaking, which is a lot, and they used it brilliantly to open most of the mountain. They also got lucky with a five ′′ snowfall the night before.

The ski slopes

They had access to 5 ski pods, beginning with the main chair, which they named the “Triple Chair.” With practically total snowmaking coverage, this serves an excellent range of terrain on the lower mountain. Also quiet is Miami Beach, a starting region they just passed through once.

Taking Royal’s Run from the top of Triple, you may ski by the top of the closed Paradise chair. This is excellent terrain, but snowmaking must be open regularly. They’re calling it “Bonus Terrain” right now, presumably because it’s rarely available. Oddly, they spent the money on a fast quad instead of replacing the Grizzly chair.

Food and lodging

At the bottom, there are two lodges. One is a Cafeteria that serves standard fare at a low cost. The price of a Hamburger, the lowest we’ve ever seen at $6.25 (in 2016), is a decent indicator of food prices at a ski resort. Amazing. The other is the Bierstube bar, which was packed to capacity. They did not enter the mid-mountain lodge, which was also open.

These structures are all quite old and in desperate need of repair and renovation, but given the low costs for everything there, that is unlikely to happen anytime soon. In 2016, they paid only $52 for Holiday lift tickets and $22 for a two-person meal.

Welcome to 1985! They had a lengthy talk with the ski patrol at the top warming hut and learned a lot about the finest places to ski. They also met a resident who introduced herself, took the pictures, greeted us, and explained about the neighborhood. Super friendly folks made this a truly memorable experience.

The Positive

  • Consistent snowfall
  • Excellent intermediate terrain
  • Beautiful scenery
  • Usually not congested
  • Inexpensive
  • a lot of grooming

The negative

  • The significant one is the need for snowfall
  • Lifts and facilities that are getting old
  • Snowmaking is required on all lift pods

Why should you go to Red Lodge Mountain?

Red Lodge Mountain features a ski and snowboard school for children ages four and up, providing beginner and advanced lesson/lift packages. On the other hand, Red Lodge Mountain is neither an Epic Pass nor an Icon Pass destination. There are three dining options on the mountain, from cafeteria-style grab-and-go cuisine to table service, all located at the Base or mid-mountain.

In this section of Montana, February and March are frequently the most incredible months for good snow conditions. However, April has milder temps, and powder conditions are usually good. Red Lodge Mountain does not have the long weekend lift lines that larger resorts such as Big Sky do, but avoiding holiday weekends is your best chance for uncrowded terrain and fresh powder.
