Those who want to stay on the pistes will like the lengthy blacks under the K-1 Express Gondola and the Superstar path beneath the chair of the same name, which holds annual World Cup races each December. Accommodation on the slope is available at the Snowshed base and across the street at Sunrise, where ski-in/ski-out condominiums are the norm. There are, however, few restaurants and pubs to visit; it may be hushed during the week, especially since many tourists travel up from Boston or New York on weekends.

Most visitors stay in condominiums, lodges, and B&Bs along the 5km access route from Highway 4 to the ski resort. This is also where you’ll find a lot of restaurants and pubs. A bus service connects these destinations regularly; however, owning a vehicle simplifies traveling.

The History of Vermont’s Killington Ski Resort

The resort has a rich history that dates back almost a century. What began as a hotel on the Peak of Killington Peak has become a popular four-season tourist destination with unlimited winter activities and many ski-in/ski-out condo rentals in Killington, VT! Join us as we look back at the resort’s history and how Killington, Vermont, came to be.

Killington Peak is Vermont’s and the Green Mountains’ second-highest Peak. The top was initially accessible in 1859 when a horse route was cleared, but it wasn’t until 1879 that a carriageway was created that it became utterly accessible. This carriage path enabled M. Meyerhoffer to build a near-summit hotel he inaugurated in 1880.

After many years of success, the hotel was sold to Marcellus Wheeler in 1901. By 1907, the hotel and the carriage road leading to it had been abandoned and were in ruin.

In 1917, a party of Green Mountain Club members accomplished the first ascent of Killington Peak. The hotel was beyond repair, and Mortimer Proctor bought the top property two years later. Proctor deeded a piece of this property to build a lodge in honor of Charles P. Cooper, a former Green Mountain Club member. The lodge’s construction was finished in 1940.

The Vermont Forest and Parks Department started talking about building a ski lodge on Killington Peak, and the state eventually bought the property for this purpose in 1945. On the other hand, plans to develop property for a ski resort only went further for a decade.
