When you only have a few days off, going south is ideal! Many sites in Mexico are only a few hours away by plane, especially if you live in one of the US’s southern border states. I had four days off recently and decided to take a brief trip to Puerto Vallarta because it’s warm in January and only a three-hour flight from Los Angeles (where I’m situated). While in Mexico, I had the pleasure to work with and stay at the luxury boutique hotel Casa Velas, which I will discuss in this post. As always, all of my opinions are my own!
The Resort’s Background
Casa Velas is part of the Velas Resorts family, which comprises many resorts in Mexico’s critical coastal tourism areas. It is a modest, premium boutique hotel located somewhat inland from the ocean and surrounded by golf courses in Puerto Vallarta. There are just 80 suites, so it always feels open. It is all-inclusive (food and beverages) and adults-only, so it is peaceful and quiet. If you prefer, two additional Velas properties in Puerto Vallarta are family-friendly. Sadly, the resort isn’t beachfront, but they own and run a little beach club directly on the ocean that guests can enjoy.
One of the finest aspects of the hotel is the variety of amenities available! We wish we had time to sample them all, but here is a comprehensive list to give you an idea of what Casa Velas offers.

- Isn’t that good? Everything you could want is there at your fingers. I’ll explain how everything that happened during our brief stay at the resort worked out for us.
- Our Accommodation
Casa Velas has eight suites, and we were assigned a Grand Class Suite.
It was around 600 square feet and included a tiny private plunge pool on the terrace and a jacuzzi tub in the bathroom. We had a king-sized bed with a nice shell-shaped alcove behind it that was lit up with the turndown service. A mini bar with food and drinks was also available and was included in the all-inclusive accommodation pricing. Still, water, sparkling water, and beer were open.
We also received a half-bottle of red wine. I wish there had been white wine or champagne in the fridge. We could have had that from room service, but we only ordered breakfast during our stay. If you did not have breakfast brought, you could still make coffee in your room using the Nespresso machine. However, there was simply sugar and no cream.
Private Beach Club Casa Velas
Although Casa Velas is a peaceful haven, it is off the beach, which puts it at a disadvantage compared to competing resorts. To remedy this, they have a tiny private beach club property where guests are shuttled back and forth. The club has a pool and beach loungers, as well as cocktails and food. We sat on the beach for a while before ordering some light fare for lunch. Of course, the dinner was complemented by pia coladas! We had tuna tostadas, shrimp cocktail, and ceviche, all of which were fantastic! Both of the resort’s restaurants have a superb selection of fresh fish.
If you swim in the ocean or pool, the beach club provides towels and showers. If you want to get out of the sun, there’s a lounge space upstairs with a television and a pool table. When the sun goes down, the patio transforms into a lovely setting for dining. With Mediterranean dishes, the menu gets more formal. They strongly advise you to make a reservation because the restaurant is small and can only handle a few guests at a time. We ate there one night for dinner, and the cuisine and service were on par with the main resort.
The Pool (or Pools)
The resort’s pool is stunning! It is bordered by palm trees and tropical vegetation, surrounded by golf courses. This makes it particularly quiet. It features shallow built-in loungers and an enjoyable temperature, making it an excellent escape from the Mexican heat. The pool is surrounded by loungers and cabanas that are provided with towels. There’s also the Aqua above Bar swim-up bar. We only spent a little time around this pool because we preferred the Private Beach pool. Who wouldn’t want to swim in a pool beside the beach?
Service
The service at Casa Velas was exceptional, as one would expect from a four-star, four-diamond property. Everyone we turned to seemed willing to assist us with whatever we needed. I had the impression that there were more personnel than guests! The central location where we encountered excellent service was in the restaurants.
I’m familiar with the standards to which Forbes and AAA (who dole out star and diamond awards) hold their employees, and they have them very well. It wasn’t intrusive or bothersome, but our demands were met exceptionally efficiently and quickly. While we were there, we felt like royalty. One of my favorite aspects was when the staff thanked you; they would place their right hand over their heart. It was an excellent addition to their training to help guests feel at ease!

Overall, I recommend a stay at Casa Velas. It’s a fantastic spot to come and rest, whether you stay at the resort the whole time or travel to the private beach club. If you go out and visit Puerto Vallarta or the nearby areas of Jalisco and Nayarit, Casa Velas gives a lovely retreat from some of the commotion of the outdoors.
