Bungalows Key Largo, located 63 miles from Miami International Airport, gives the impression of being far away without traveling far.
The Overseas Highway disappears into the background once you approach the gates, and you enter a world of impeccably maintained grounds studded with light turquoise lounges, hot pink bougainvillea, and emerald tropical foliage, a contemporary twist on nostalgic Florida beach resorts of yesteryear.
The resort’s outstanding beachfront location, attractive and spacious bungalows
Over-21 policy make it an ideal place for adults searching for a romantic break or a girl’s trip. In my case, the resort was perfect for a completely relaxing girls’ weekend break with my sister in May. Our first evening began with a sunset catamaran ride with nibbles, wine and beer, and light yacht rock, followed by supper and nocturnal entertainment. One of the best advantages of an all-inclusive trip is knowing that almost everything is taken care of for you, so you don’t have to meticulously plan every minute of your vacation.
We never had to worry about finding a cabana at the serene.
There is no sandy entrance to the beach (you must descend steps to swim in the sea), but there are floating rings where you can relax before walking back to the sandy regions on land, like with many “beaches” in the Florida Keys. Aside from the sunset catamaran sailing, other highlights of our vacation included a tiki boat party and a group karaoke night with us dancing in the sand and laughing until our cheeks hurt. When we weren’t splashing in the ocean or pool, we were hanging out at the thatched-roof tiki bar, sipping a mai tai by the pool, or relaxing in the Living Room lounge.
We sipped and ate around the resort’s five eating establishments: Fish Tales, Sea Seor, Bogie and Bacall’s, Sunset Tiki Bar, and Hemingway Bar, and smacked at both pools. Among the resort’s eateries, Sea Seor stands out for its riverfront, toes-in-the-sand seating that provides a beautiful sunset view. At the same time, you chat over margaritas and nachos (and really, what could be better for a girl’s weekend getaway?). The Hemingway Bar, named after famed Keys resident Ernest Hemingway, came in second place; its inventive cocktails go beyond the traditional frozen pia colada seen at most all-inclusive resorts (though we’re sure they’d create a fine frozen drink, too).

Meals at five restaurants, most alcoholic beverages, use of cruiser bikes and some non-motorized water sports equipment, entertainment, valet parking, and cabanas and loungers at the property’s beaches and pools are all included in the rate at Bungalows Key Largo. Excursions, such as the catamaran above cruise and tiki boat ride, are extra expenses, as are premium alcoholic beverages, in-room dining, spa treatments, and, most importantly, gratuities.
The closest major airport to the resort is Miami International Airport, followed by Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. We didn’t plan to leave because it was an all-inclusive facility, so we drove an Uber from MIA to the resort and booked a car service to take us back to the airport at the end of our stay.
