Children will learn to swim and play in the water in a secure setting while under the direct supervision of lifeguards who are CPR-certified. Summer Program for Power Scholars
In our neighborhood, 1 in 5 children is from low-income families. Since these kids frequently enter school unprepared, their chances of having access to education and employment in the future are increased. At the Y, we think all kids can succeed. By giving kids access to literacy resources, STEM activities, and enrichment programs in a nurturing environment under the direction of professional teachers, our Summer Achievement Gap Program empowers kids to do more than they ever imagined possible and contributes to closing the achievement gap.
Power Scholars Update For 2021
The YMCA of Central Virginia and Lynchburg City Schools collaborated to provide Power Scholars Academy in the summer of 2021. This five-week program blends academic education with engaging, hands-on enrichment activities. This YMCA of Central Virginia program, which recently finished its eighth year, provides a holistic learning experience that combines academics with enrichment and the development of social-emotional skills, which is essential to the program’s success. With the aid of the program, children can improve their academic performance when they return to school in the fall.
Seven hundred twenty-seven pupils in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade were found to be falling behind in reading and arithmetic by Lynchburg City Schools. Due to this shortcoming, they were eligible to enroll in the Power Scholars Academy, which is a free program for students and their families. Every kid was expected to improve in reading and math by at least one month. Typically, students lose two to six months of learning over the summer; however, the influence of COVID-19 significantly accelerated these losses. However, during 57 hours of training, Lynchburg City School kids improved three months in reading and math, exceeding goals set for the program thanks to the holistic and comprehensive curriculum and dedicated trained teachers and staff.
Former Lynchburg City School and Bedford County School teacher Rebecca White is the Director of Achievement Gap Programs for the YMCA of Central Virginia Association. White is aware of the negative effects that arise when students perform poorly in fundamental areas like reading and math. She says, “We are so delighted that our Power Scholars pupils achieved such great achievements. Key determinants of a student’s success include growth in literacy and math skills. These pupils left the program with greater confidence in their ability to learn and a bridge to the forthcoming new school year, White continued.
The program provided students with opportunities for literacy and math instruction in the mornings, and enrichment activities like STEAM activities, physical activity, virtual field trips, and the arts were offered in the afternoons.
The director of equity and community relations at Lynchburg City Schools, Ethel Reeves, provided additional information about the program’s effects: “The YMCA Power Scholars program had a substantial positive impact on the academic progress of our students. By enhancing academic performance and social-emotional learning, the program employs evidence-based treatments. We applaud and want to continue the growth that our pupils have achieved with the help of this program. “Lynchburg City Schools and the YMCA of Central Virginia hope to extend the program to include additional elementary children and may pilot a program for middle school students as we make arrangements for summer 2022,” Reeves stated. Lynchburg City Schools values its relationship with the YMCA of Central Virginia and is eager to work together again in the future.
