Second-Longest Left In The World, According To The Pavones Surf Camp Guide Costa Rica

One of the most beautiful surf locations in the Western Hemisphere, if not the entire globe, is Pavones, a Costa Rica surf camp. Surfers from all over the world come here to ride the wave and experience the pura vida lifestyle of Costa Rica because it breaks for over a mile. The surfing in surf camp Pavones, Costa Rica, is some of the best, so don’t miss it.

In Pavone’s surf camp, Costa Rica, the waves are renowned. It is unquestionably one of the best waves in Costa Rica and among the best in all of Central America. The second-longest left-breaking wave in the world is actually found in Pavones!

This wave is actually rideable for minutes. Precisely three minutes. This wave spans almost a mile as it breaks!

On the Osa Peninsula, in Costa Rica’s far south, is the town of Pavones. It is a very remote surf break in a very remote surf town in the South Pacific. If you can find it, you’re in for a special treat because this break and Costa Rican surf town are much less crowded than other surf breaks in Costa Rica due to their remoteness.

The Various Pavones Surf Spots in Costa Rica

A left-breaking point break that circles the shore is called Pavones. There are five different takeoff locations when everything is functioning properly. The most advanced takeoff place is towards the bottom, while the spot closest to the interior is better for beginners and longboarders (usually).

The mouth of the Rio Claro River

When Pavones is truly performing, this is the deepest takeoff position available. Finding it is simple; just seek the takeoff location on the break that is farthest from the mouth of the Rio Claro River.

The takeoff location will be situated all the way down, almost in the rocks, if it is large enough. This break can support waves up to 20 feet, and although the takeoff is not very steep, it is HEAVY. When it’s so significant, they only speak as experts.

You’ll be sprinting down the face to make steep parts as soon as you hit the first drop. You’ll probably have just caught some of the longest waves of your life if you make it out, even just halfway!

Ocean Wall

Technically, this is Pavones’ third takeoff location. The wave had slowed down considerably by this time, making the drop-in and takeoff much more relaxed. For surfers at the intermediate level who aren’t quite adept enough to make the heavy drop near the river mouth, this takeoff location is fantastic.

Because it is less steep and can support a board with more volume, it is also a better starting point for longboarders.

Accessing Pavones Surf Camp Costa Rica

Pavones is extremely far away. Because of its remote location, Pavones’ surf is both magnificent and challenging to access. There are several methods to get to Pavones Surf, including:

Getting to Pavones Surf by Car

Driving from the San Jose Airport to Pavones is one method of transportation. I’ll tell you right now that Google Maps’ estimate of a six-hour travel time is unreliable. In Costa Rica, long drives generally take 2-3 hours longer than shown by Google Maps.

Therefore, it is prudent to allow 8 hours for the travel from San Jose to Pavones.

Cost: This is based on the time of year, the type of automobile, the insurance, and your negotiation prowess. The price range for a medium-sized 4WD SUV is $30 to $75 a day. Remember that the drop-off price for one-way automobile rentals is normally around $50.

For a group of individuals going on a surf trip, renting a car is a fantastic alternative because you can split the cost!

Getting to Pavones Surf by Plane

Another method to go to Pavones by air is through Golfito. Daily flights by Sansa Airlines connect SJO with Golfito, a port city close to Pavones. Flights only last for about 40 minutes and cost about $130 USD.

You may travel to Pavones by cab or local bus from Golfito. A taxi will probably cost $60, while a bus will cost around $3 USD.

For anyone on a shorter surf trip or traveling alone, flying to Pavones is a great alternative to spending the full day in a car.

Getting to Pavones Surf by Public Transportation:

The most time-consuming and least expensive way to travel to Pavones is by public transportation. Two buses travel daily from San Jose to Golfito; one leaves early in the morning, and the other departs in the afternoon. This bus costs about $12 USD and travels for about 8 hours.
Then, for roughly $3 USD, you may ride the bus from Golfito to Pavones.
If you’re strapped for cash but not for time, public transportation is a fantastic choice because you want to have at least a few days to appreciate this surfing destination.

The best surf camp season at Pavones, Costa Rica

May until early November is the rainy season.

The rainy season is typically the ideal time to surf Pavones. Pavones need a nice, steady south or southwest swell to truly turn on. There are lots of these throughout the wet season!

Because there are fewer tourists, everything is more affordable, and Costa Rica as a whole experience bigger swells during the rainy season, it’s often a really wonderful time to go surfing there.

November to April, the dry season.

The wave at Pavones will be flat for a significant portion of the dry season. Thus, this is often not the ideal time to surf there.

Don’t be discouraged, though; Pavones can still be a great wave to surf, even with a tiny swell if it’s coming from the right direction.
