Wilderness restoration

The magnificent Kulala Wilderness Reserve covers 27,000 hectares where Little Kulala is located. But this magnificent desert setting wasn’t always like this. The farmland area was once used for subsistence goat farming, and the local wildlife was largely eradicated. About 30 years ago, Wilderness fought to preserve the historical topography and restore the area to its once spectacular natural state.

Cons And Important Information Regarding Little Kulala Camp

Depending on where you’re coming from, getting to and from the lodge may involve a long journey on gravel roads: Swakopmund is 400 km (248 miles) away, while Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, is 380 km (236 miles). Due to the lengthy journey, They advise staying at least three nights, so you may spend at least two whole days at the resort. If you don’t want to fly, a daily scheduled charter aircraft to the property’s private airport is another option for getting there (which is just 5 minutes from the lodge).

Little Kulala camp is not gated off like the majority of lodges in Namibia; thus, visitors must be on guard at all times. There is no physical barrier preventing leopards, snakes, or scorpions from invading the area around the lodge in the Namib Desert. It is advised that visitors carry a torch when exploring the lodge after dark.

Little Kulala’s wifi connection isn’t particularly strong; it’s only adequate for sending texts and checking email (but this is true of all Namibian hotels in remote areas). Additionally, there is no television in the room, but who needs that in such a breathtaking setting that emphasizes re-connecting visitors with nature?

Little Kulala camp has a few modest, cool-watered private plunge pools that are tucked away in the shade. However, they are sufficient for cooling off during the summer heat.
Little Kulala is not inexpensive, but the rate is all-inclusive (including all meals and all activities).

Camp Little Kulala The Namibian Desert’s Peace and Magnificence Meet the Simple Luxury of an Eco-Resort

The exclusive Kulala Wilderness Reserve is home to the desert refuge known as Little Kulala, which serves as a gateway to the Namib Sand Sea with its soaring burnt orange dunes and starry skies.

The Little Kulala Camp is designed with a desert theme, with lovely outside architecture and exquisite interior design. The interiors were created to offer a totally natural and distinctive experience in this stunning desert setting. The relaxing pastel tones of the desert are accurately portrayed through the liberal use of neutral hues, textures, and natural light. A highly organic camp that draws influence from its surroundings, particularly the majestic Dead Vlei in the center of Sossusvlei, is made up entirely of pure linen, cotton, and mohair that has been colored with natural vegetable dyes. Within a mesmerizing setting, this Camp has its own personality. It is simple to fall in love with Sossusvlei because of the delicate, layered splendor of the desert at sunrise or sunset and the breathtaking, huge, and incredibly old landscape. The isolated and spiritual qualities of the virgin alpine territory on the horizon, along with the stillness, may very well cause the outward trip to turn inwardly. Little Kulala is open every day of the year.

The kulalas flawlessly blend into the ageless desert scenery.

Dining

Dinner is typically served inside, where a roaring fire is lit in a big stone fireplace to keep everyone warm during the chillier winter months of July to August. Dinner is served outside on the deck during the warmer months under the stunning Namibian stars.

Conservation

Wilderness Safaris established a business in 1996 on property near the magnificent Sossusvlei. Very few of the local animals were still present because this area had previously been used for subsistence goat rearing. However, the animals started to slowly reappear after a program to remove the cattle fences and invasive species. The Kulala Wilderness Reserve was subsequently created as the region was expanded to border the enormous Namib Naukluft Park. The Kulala Wilderness Reserve’s establishment provided an opportunity to examine and evaluate the restoration of this 37,000-hectare/92,000-acre area following years of intense cultivation. The bat-eared fox was investigated on the Reserve in 2000 as an indicator species for land rehabilitation, which is when the Small Carnivore Research Project got its start. Aardwolves, black-backed jackals, Cape foxes, and African wildcats were studied after that. The Kulala Wilderness Reserve’s Wilderness Camps offer logistical support for this endeavor.

Activities

The Little Kulala guides are extremely informed, proud, and committed to this most exceptional area.

Directed drives

Through a private entry into the Reserve, escorted morning drives to the magnificent towering dunes of Sossusvlei are the first activity at Little Kulala. The Namib Desert and the Namib Naukluft National Park are both home to Sossusvlei. The iconic vista of Namib is made up of its renowned gigantic mountains of golden orange sand dunes and flat valley floors.

Escorted walks

Offers sightings of plants and animals that have evolved to these desert circumstances, including the elusive aardwolf, ostrich, springbok, oryx, bat-eared fox, black-backed jackal, and stunning scenic views on the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve.

Wildlife

Ostriches, springboks, and gemsbok are just a few of the desert-adapted animals that may be seen in and around Little Kulala. Smaller animals like bat-eared foxes and aardwolves can be observed at night in the cool desert air, along with spotted and brown hyenas and even cheetahs. Due to its need for the distinctive sands of the region, the dune lark has a limited geographic range. This dry region is home to a great variety of insects, reptiles, and rodents; the sound of the barking gecko at dusk is emblematic of the desert.

Photography

Wide-angle photography is made possible by the isolation of this enormous, rough, epic desert scene of Wilderness, sunshine, blue skies, rolling red sand dunes, and landscapes.

Staying In Namibia’s Little Kulala Camp

One of my favorite places to travel in Africa in Namibia. A photographer’s paradise, Namibia is located just north of South Africa and features miles of arid desert, shipwreck skeletons buried in dunes, and world-class safari experiences in its national parks. I stayed at the Little Kulala during my first visit to Namibia; it is a desert paradise that initially opened its doors in 1996. Before Wilderness Safaris intervened and assisted in the property’s rehabilitation to become what it is now, the area used to contain very few native species. The location of Little Kulala, just outside of Sossusvlei, makes it convenient for visitors to travel to famous sites like Big Daddy Dune and Deadvlei.

How to reach Little Kulala

Located inside the Kulala Wilderness Reserve, the lodge. The Sand Sea of Namibia is accessible from Sesriem by a short 10-mile route. The simplest way to get here if you’re pressed for time is to fly into Sossusvlei and then drive a short distance inside the Reserve. As part of a road trip across Southern Namibia, we decided to rent a car in Namibia and traveled from Walvis Bay to the lodge in our 44.

Lodge Little Kulala

Little Kulala camp presents itself as an organic camp with neutral colors, natural light, and lots of texture that draws a lot of inspiration from the surroundings. It consists of 11 climate-controlled villas where visitors may enjoy the utmost in a desert getaway in Namibia. In addition to the separate villas, the communal space has a lounge, eating area, wine cellar, craft store, library, and lounge. A larger pool with picturesque views of the red desert is also located in the common area.

A Rooms

Little Kulala’s accommodations were influenced by Deadvlei. There are 11 thatched “kulalas,” each of which has its own plunge pool with views of the stunning desert plains. The villas also have a cozy Star Bed, ideal for a night of stargazing or a romantic sunrise cuddle while watching hot air balloons take off! I adored the interiors’ simplistic African design! The lodge has done a fantastic job of incorporating elements of the desert indoors and producing a beautiful environment.

Camp Little Kulala Activities

The majority of available activities are included in the cost of your stay. However, you are free to choose how you spend your time. Deadvlei and Sossusvlei are both close by, and each offers a different type of landscape experience. Famous sand dunes surround Sossusvlei, and Deadvlei, an adjacent white clay pan that stands out against the dead camel thorn bushes, is close by. Additionally, Big Daddy Dune is climbable!

  • ATVing: One of the excursions I went on was an ATV ride, and I loved it! We had the chance to see animals as we traveled through the Kulala Wilderness Reserve, including oryx, springbok, and the cuddly bat-eared foxes!
  • Nature Drives: There is plenty of scenery and wildlife to be observed on the more than 91,000 acres of property. The oryx, also known as the unicorn of the desert, as well as brown hyaenas, birds, and bat-eared foxes, should all be observed.
  • Hot Air Balloon Safaris: While seeing the Reserve on foot is a fantastic opportunity to experience everything it has to offer, a hot air balloon safari offers completely another viewpoint. Seeing the dunes from the air is definitely worth the extra fee, despite it.
  • Sesriem Canyon: This canyon is definitely worth a visit because it has been formed by millions of years of water flowing. The views from the summit are amazing, and it is currently a little under two miles long!
  • Scorpion Night Walks: For a singular experience, go on a nighttime desert excursion in Namibia. When the sun sets, the desolate terrain comes to life, and you may see scorpions that shine at night.

Elegant Inn Little Kulala Camp

Little Kulala melds into the hues of the Namib Desert with its red clay walls and concealed cabins. A more spectacular site is impossible to imagine, with mountains serving as the background and dunes cascading into the distance. Each hut includes a rooftop patio where you may spend the night under Namibia’s famed desert skies. The outdoor dining area offers lavish vistas if you’re not up for an adventure. Since the lodge has a separate entrance to the national park, you may avoid crowds and visit Namib-Naukluft as early as possible to take advantage of the stunning morning light. The morning will be spent in Sossusvlei and Sesriem on a full day, and the afternoon will be spent either driving or walking around Kulala’s own Reserve. You can hire a guide or ask for their advice on where to find the best place to watch the sunset from a dune. To fit in an optional hot-air balloon flight, you’ll need to stay an additional night. You might also wish to stay an extra night to really appreciate Little Kulala’s remoteness since this Camp is meant to replicate the vastness and seclusion of the Namibian desert.
