NYC Opens Free Summer Camp Program For Students In Public Schools, Grades K–12: How To Use
The Summer Rising Initiative is a free initiative that combines the programming of the Department of Youth and Community Development and the academic support provided by the NYC Department of Education. Officials from the city claim that it is a comprehensive program based on the needs of each individual student, integrated with social-emotional learning, and open to all kids, not just those who might require additional academic assistance with a particular subject. For what the mayor called “a full summer of programming for kids just so they have an opportunity to do something great to continue to make progress and come back from all the challenges that they’ve had in the last year,” the summer rising initiative will combine academics, culture, enrichment, and recreation programs. The fact that we would adopt a policy for everyone in the summer is very novel for our city and uncommon nationwide. Thus, summer school as we know it comes to an end. This is a novel concept.
