The huge resort community of Sunriver, a well-liked vacation spot located south of Bend in central Oregon, is crisscrossed by a network of paved, multi-use paths called the Sunriver Bike Path. The numerous miles of easy-to-use off-road trails are available to visitors in the summer and are a terrific way to navigate around the area while also giving trail users the time to breathe in the clean Oregon air and take in the stunning, forested landscape.
Description Of The Sunriver Bike Path
On the eastern side of the neighborhood, Fort Rock Park has playgrounds and outdoor sports facilities, while to the west, the trail follows a stretch of the picturesque, flowing Deschutes River. The bike route also connects to the paved Sun-Lava Trail at the northern edge of the neighborhood, providing the ideal opportunity to explore the surrounding natural areas of the resort for those seeking to visit some of the amazing volcanic formations within the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. The Sunriver Bike Path offers a compelling reason for guests to bring or rent bikes while they are, thereby providing access to nearly all of the locations within the resort area. Access to the Sun-Lava Trail and parking are both available close to the trail’s starting on Forest Service Road 600, just north of E. Cascade Road. Parking is also available at several points around Sunriver. Both the Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory and Fort Rock Park provide parking spaces and bathrooms.
The Finest Mountain Biking Routes Near Sunriver
Mountain biking routes are well-known in Central Oregon, and Sunriver is encircled by them. The 11-mile-long Deschutes River Trail, which is the longest option, follows the Deschutes River north of Bend. Riders pass by deep pools, flowing waterfalls, and a rock shelter utilized by hunters more than 6,000 years ago in the region. The Roundabout Trail, a 3.3-mile loop with a rough part best suited for experienced riders, offers a shorter option on the other side of the Deschutes. One of Sunriver’s more recent pathways, it links to the Elko Point Trail (0.5 miles away), which offers views of the Deschutes River. For extra riding adventure, riders can also connect with Afternoon Delight, which brings you to Tyler’s Traverse and Catch & Release. Finally, think about the Swan Song Trail. A 2-mile gravel trail that is incredibly short and simple, with views of the Deschutes River and the Sunriver Marina, is ideal for families with young children or beginner riders. This route connects to the more extensive Roundabout Trail in the north and may be reached from the Benson Day Use Area in the south.
Sunriver’s Top-Paved Bike Trails
There are two alternatives for paved bike trails in Sunriver: first, you may just leave the village (especially if you’re renting bikes from Sunriver Sports) and travel along the 34 miles of wonderful, broad bike pathways. My favorite sections are the picturesque 4-mile “Airport Loop” because there are no roundabouts or tunnels to worry about, and you get to drive by the golf course, river, horse stables, & marina. Additionally, the “River Loop” is a terrific ride with a few tunnels that follows the Deschutes River and takes you up to the stunning and picturesque bridge in Sunriver. Sunriver’s Simple Mountain Bike Trails Swan Song is a gravel trail that leaves Sunriver on the west bank of the Deschutes River and is 1.9 miles long and flat. The trail travels from Besson Park to a location close to Cardinal Bridge.
1.) The Deschutes River Trail, which runs for 11 miles and gains 1,280 feet in height from Sunriver to Dillon Falls: Bring GPS or a map if you want to navigate this path since there are several turn-offs and there may be a LOT of walkers in some areas. Make careful to leave a second car at Dillon Falls or Benham Falls if you don’t want to ride 22 miles roundtrip (for a shorter ride).
Sunriver’s Intermediate Sunriver Bike Trails Map
1.) Roundabout (3.3 miles, 340 feet of gain in elevation) Pick up this circuitous trail on the west bank of the Deschutes River, directly across from the Sunriver Bridge. You enter the Sunriver forest on this quick, single-track loop. You can do a quick out-and-back to Elko Point, which has a view of the river at the northern end.
2.) Afternoon Delight (4.2 miles, 338 feet of elevation gain): This fantastic connector route connects Sunriver with the Wanoga Trail network and terminates close to the start of Tyler’s Traverse. Either the Swan Song Trail or the Roundabout Trail can be used to access this trail from Sunriver.
3.) Duodenum (2.9 miles, 375 feet of elevation gain): A smooth ride with enjoyable features and a lot of banked bends. Take Tyler’s Traverse or Tyler’s Up route and catch it halfway.
4.) Tyler’s Traverse Trail (6.5 miles; Intermediate-Difficult; 1,719 feet elevation gain (or DESCENT)): Locals love Tyler’s Traverse, a single-track, one-way path with a variety of attractions. Epic views, flowing meadows, challenging armored climbs, huge berms, jumps, drops, and rock outcroppings are all present. Most riders just go downhill.
Sunriver’s Hard Mountain Bike Trails
1.) Tyler’s Traverse Trail and Tyler’s Up route (6.5 miles, 1,719 feet of elevation gain): Tyler’s Traverse has alternatives that can transform it from a fun, intermediate ride to an EXPERT level ride, including two hard climbs in the “Penny Mine” region. Additionally, there are jumps and berms in the meadow area for more experienced riders. Note: If this is your first time riding, you might want to check out the expert line on Tyler’s with a local or guide because it involves a number of short jumps followed by a somewhat blind 5 to 6-foot cliff drop.
2.) Tiddlywinks (7.2 miles, 1,576 feet of elevation gain): This SUPER FUN intermediate-difficult track can be accessed from Kiwa Butte or from the Wanoga Sno Park lot, which is located off of Century Drive. There are fewer pebbles and more berms and jumps in this area, and up along the Kiwa Trail, there are open, rolling trains. One of the most common mountain bike trails in the nation is located here!
Three of Sunriver’s Best Mountain Biking Trails
Without the pure thrill of rolling up and down a rough, uneven trail while attempting to avoid falling, popping a tire, or eating the bugs flying in front of your face, no summer mountain vacation would be complete. To help you on your next trip to Sunriver, Oregon, we at Cascara Vacation Rentals have put together this list of the top mountain riding paths. One of the many activities you and your family or friends can do while visiting one of our villas is mountain riding.
Sunriver’s Top mountain biking routes
This list, chosen by John Warren, a co-owner of Sunriver Sports, includes both established and comparatively recent single-track mountain biking routes. You may ride your bike to the trailhead from wherever you stay because each of these paths begins inside the main Sunriver Resort border. According to Warren, none of these courses are very difficult or technical, making them ideal for first-time mountain bikers and those who wish to bring their family. These paths carry riders through dense pine forests, up hills for views, and occasionally down to the Deschutes River, where they may bathe their faces in icy, crystal-clear water flowing directly downhill from The Cascades’ melting snowfall. “They’re also lovely,” Warren added. The Deschutes River Trail is located in Oregon. The Deschutes River Trail in Sunriver begins just past Roundabout #12 and winds its way 11 miles through a national forest as it follows the Deschutes River’s banks. It leads you past magnificent waterfalls, deep pools, and a rock shelter used by hunters more than 6,000 years ago. If you’re traveling with a second vehicle, it might be a smart idea to leave one car at the trail’s opposite end, close to Seventh Mountain Resort on the West Side of Bend, so you can travel the trail’s entire 11 miles without having to go back. To understand more about the river and how it influenced the history of the area, you may want to plan a post-ride visit to the Deschutes Historical Museum in downtown Bend.
The Roundabout Trail (View map) — Just west of Sunriver’s Cardinal Landing Bridge, the Roundabout Trail creates a 3.3-mile loop through the Deschutes National Forest. It contains several rocky sections that could be difficult for beginners who ride mountain bikes. However, it is worth your time because of its connections to Tyler’s Traverse and Catches and Release Trails, as well as the Elko Point Trail, which offers views of the Deschutes River, and Afternoon Delight. This is also one of Sunriver’s newest mountain bike routes, so anyone who hasn’t been there in the last two to three years will find it to be a brand-new experience. A map of the Swan Song Trail, Warren’s final suggestion, is a two-mile gravel walk that connects Besson Park with the Cardinal Landing Bridge. This is one of the simplest and shortest bike routes in the entire resort and is named for the swans that are as much a part of Sunriver’s culture as its World War II background. However, the views of Mary McCollum Park and the Sunriver Marina make it well worth the trip. Remember that there are 45 mountain bike trails within 15 to 20 minutes of Sunriver; Warren’s favorites are just three of them. Since each of these routes connects to one or two others, it is possible to spend hours riding through the woods without ever touching the same patch of the ground again (for example, the Roundabout Trail connects you to the Elko Point and Afternoon Delight trails). It’s entirely up to you to organize and complete the trip.
Organizing A Mountain Bike Trip
Wherever your urge to go mountain biking in Sunriver leads you, there are a few general considerations you’ll want to keep in mind. We’ve condensed these pieces of advice just for you into three simple steps that you should keep in mind while you plan your vacation. Bring your own bike or rent one. While any conventional bike will get you across the paved trails that wind through Sunriver if you want to ride one of the top mountain biking tracks there, you’ll need a solid mountain bike that fits your body size and ability level. If you don’t have a mountain bike or don’t want to bring one on vacation, Sunriver Sports, Warren’s company, has a well-stocked rental shop that will help you choose the ideal bike. Just make sure to reserve your bike well in advance to avoid being left without one for your mountain riding expedition.
Bring the necessary gear – Regardless of how long your vacation will last, it’s crucial to pack the appropriate clothing and safety gear if you want to stay comfortable and prevent getting hurt while exploring. This entails donning a lightweight jersey to keep you from overheating while you’re exerting yourself up a steep hill and a pair of mountain biking shorts or leggings to cushion your butt against the mountain bike’s seat. Assuming you fall, remember to pack a helmet, knee pads, and a set of gloves because all three of these items can prevent a little inconvenience from developing into a serious emergency. Bring the appropriate map. Just as crucial as having the perfect mountain bike, the appropriate attire, and the necessary safety equipment is knowing where you are and where you’re going. This need can be met by opening a GPS map on your phone, but having a paper copy on hand is also a good choice in case your battery runs out, you reach a signal-less area, or, God forbid, you fall into a river and are unable to find a cup of rice in time to dry your phone out.
