Salem Bike Trails

by Leave a Comment

It shouldn’t come as a big surprise that Cycling is better for kids than playing computer games and watching TV. After all, biking gets you outside and moving, which is always preferable to staying inside. Here are five of the best family bike rides in the Salem area that don’t involve dealing with traffic to inspire families to get out on two wheels. These rides are under 8 miles long, usually flat, and take place on paved roads with no traffic to worry about.

Top Bicycle Routes Near Salem

Old Downtown Route-The Historic Downtown Biking Route in Salem is undoubtedly a fantastic place to start. Be sure to see area highlights, including Salem’s Historic Grand Theatre, the Salem Multicultural Institute, the Reed Opera House, and of course, our Riverfront Park. This is a really great way to visit Salem in person.

Scenic Bikeway in the Willamette Valley

Aptly described this bike route: “Cycling through picturesque towns, past views of wineries, and alongside fields of Oregon’s well-known hops. Visit vineyards for tastings and stock up at convenience stores and brewpubs. Champoeg State Park, where settlers congregated in the 1850s for what ended up being a very close vote that resulted in the founding of the state of Oregon, is the northernmost point of the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway.” Although this trail is officially long (it runs from Champoeg to Eugene), riders can ride as much or as little of it as they like and still enjoy some genuinely beautiful sights.

State Heritage Area of Champoeg

“The organization is one of the things I really value. The layout is staggered so that the route feels quite tranquil, even during the summer when it is busy. Never does it seem crowded.” The Statesman Journal, Austin Wallace riparian forest, and river vistas! The oldest shop in Oregon! Bluebirds of the West Everything a halt on a bike trail could offer is present in this historic state park. If you’re a biker wishing to tour Salem on two wheels, you must do this 8-mile out-and-back route. Park at Willamette Mission, Oregon Bike riders can enjoy breathtaking vistas of lakes, river beaches, orchards, and other breathtaking Willamette Valley natural beauties from this 1,680-acre, 4-mile track. On the horse trails, you could even see a horse or two!

Ale & Cider Trail in Salem

Who’s to say you can’t take a different biking route than usual when on vacation? This Ale & Cider path offers tourists the chance to visit various breweries and distilleries for ale and cider connoisseurs. With this, plus the passport from the Salem Brewery Association, you can receive special discounts from each location. Visit Travel Salem for a complete list of breweries.

Park in Minto-Brown Island

A popular destination for families with children is Minto-Brown Island Park. Everyone may enjoy the vistas of the Willamette River on the 7 miles of flat, simple pathways. As they go from Salem to Minto-Brown Island Park, cyclists and pedestrians have the chance to enjoy the brand-new Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge!

State Park Silver Falls

Silver Falls State Park offers lush woodland riding paths and is well-known for its picturesque waterfall hikes. Better yet, an extra four miles of trail will be added to Silver Falls’ Catamount Trail, making Oregon’s largest state park an even more exciting place to spend the day for hikers and cyclists of all skill levels. Only this track is designed specifically for mountain bikes in the state park.

the Wallace Marine Parks to the riverfront

The Riverfront Park to Wallace Marine Park is last but not least. As you travel beside the Willamette River, you will pass through the Star Complex, the Eco Earth Globe, the Union Street Railroad Bridge, and the well-known Riverfront Carousel. Of course, Wallace Marine Park and Riverfront Park all provide stunning views of the outdoors and a variety of spots to stop for a picnic lunch or perhaps go boating. These are just a few of the locations in Salem that you can tour on two wheels. All that’s left to do is organize your biking vacation! Remember that the Bike Concierge, as we have mentioned in previous pieces, can make your bike holiday a walk in the park—or perhaps we should say a ride in the park.

Salem Hills Mountain Bike Trail for Mountain Biking

The trailhead is situated at the southwest corner of the paved path that connects the basketball court and playground. The actual trail is constructed as a collection of tiered loops. You have a choice of going right or left at the trailhead. The first trail segment constructed at Salem as part of the Hot Spots program is to the right. On the park’s northern border, a piece of smooth singletrack winds past some trees. Because so many stainless steel and sterling silver forks were discovered here when the route was being built, it was given the “unofficial” moniker North Forks Trail. The path ends in the woods at an old neighborhood path that locals created and maintain to get to the park. Right from the trailhead, you can continue along the trail, which would slowly twist up a little hill past a large area of blackberry bushes. If you headed left at the trailhead, you would be here right away. The southern loops continue through open fields and some forested areas as you move south while keeping to your left. After some time, you make a loop returning to the trailhead. Easy to intermediate loops that occasionally get fast and flowy and don’t have any particularly challenging ascents.

Bike around the city of Salem

Salem offers a wealth of attractions, and biking throughout the city can help you take them all in. If you want to hire one in town, Salem Cycle’s staff can get you set up with a great hybrid that will allow you to comfortably handle any circumstances you may face while biking in Salem.

Salem bicycle riding- From The Merchant and The Hotel Salem, two of our boutique hotels, you can easily cycle to any of Salem’s downtown attractions. If you want a longer ride, you can take the paved bike route out to Winter Island Park, which has a view of Salem Harbor. Pick up the path off of Bridge Street, continue down Memorial Drive (which is a pretty quiet street but lacks a bike lane), and then turn left onto Bridge Street. Take Winter Island Road to the park to access Winter Island Light, Fort Pickering, and other attractions. It’s an easy journey and a good change of pace because it’s only a 4-mile loop from either of our residences.

Afternoon barbecue. Over 10 miles of singletrack mountain biking trails can be found at Salem Woods, where mountain cyclists should go. For a great ride through the woods, start at the trailhead in the back of the Olde Salem Green Municipal Golf Course. The New England Mountain Bike Association chapter in your area maintains the path, so it has boardwalks across puddle-filled areas, flowing portions with banked bends, and tricky rock crossings to keep things interesting. Salem Woods is a little off the main road and hence tends to be less busy, but nearby Lynn Woods is a well-known location for mountain biking in the greater Boston area.
We prefer to stop at the vegetarian/vegan café and juice bar Live Alive after a bike adventure to refuel. If you want to think of yourself as deserving of a treat after all that exercise, visit Howling Wolf Taqueria for a filling platter of nachos and a margarita. You now have everything you need for an enjoyable afternoon of biking in Salem.

Bike Trail at Salem Lake

Around the seven-mile lake loop, the Salem Lake Bike TRACK Trail has nine stations. In addition to information about the value of the lake and why it’s crucial to keep it clean, each stop has a sign with interpretative data about the flora and animals that call Salem Lake home. You can also discover advice on how to get better at biking. The Salem Lake Watershed includes Salem Lake and the adjacent lands and streams that drain into the lake. The Winston-Salem watershed offers a water supply, recreational possibilities, and a habitat for various animals.

Silver Falls State Park’s Catamount Trail (Salem, OR)

The Catamount Trail, a four-mile single track at Silver Falls State Park east of Salem, Oregon, is a prime example of a contemporary mountain biking experience. The single track, which is referred to as an “improved” cross-country path, winds through the woodland over a combination of hardpack and pine needles. There are a lot of extra features throughout the route that allows riders to get creative along the way. The route is broken up by roots and the occasional pile of rocks. The blue-rated route is fun for riders of all skill levels because of the little stump kickers, random log rides, and bumps to root-filled berms. Although upper Catamount has some uphill stretches and is classified as a directed path, it is by no means a gravity trail. Our favored method of exploring the path is to pedal four miles along a dirt road and then return via a single track. The trailhead gate is periodically left open for riders who prefer lifts. However, it’s unclear how frequently this happens.

Bike Playground in West Salem

Our main idea for the bicycle playground is depicted in a design draft by Rock Solid Trail Contracting. There are features for cyclists of all abilities, from strider bikes to expert riders. The wheeled sports playground in West Salem is made to offer recreation possibilities to people of all ages and skill levels. We asked for your opinion, and your response astounded us. We are working to create a paved-wheeled sports playground that is kid and novice-friendly, environmentally friendly, and has enough exciting features that experienced users will also have a blast. We listened to what you asked for. This complex playground design is a hit with the public thanks to its assortment of attractions and features. We had the chance to propose this concept to the West Salem Recreation Committee and the Village Board in the late spring of 2022. The first plan and Lewis Point Park as the project site were accepted by both Parties. This gave us the go-ahead to start working with experienced builders on the planning and design phase.
