Lehigh Valley Bike Trail Map

by Leave a Comment

Lehigh Valley Bike Trail Map Over 21 miles of flat paths for simple hiking or bicycling may be found in the Lehigh Valley Trail system, which is south of Rochester. The Genesee Valley Greenway in the west and Lehigh Crossing Park in the east are separated by 15.6 miles of the main Lehigh Valley Trail (LVT). The Trail travels along the former Lehigh Valley Railroad track. Built-in 1891, the railroad remained operational until its lines were sold for scrap in 1974. The firm surface of this well-traveled hiking and bike trail is made of recycled asphalt shavings.

Choosing a part of the path to explore is made simple by the Trail’s abundance of parking spaces. If you’re undecided about which section to visit, let us recommend the 1.6-mile stretch from East River Road to the Genesee Valley Greenway’s intersection. At your turnaround point at the GVG intersection, this section includes the Genesee River Bridge (see panorama above) and two picnic tables. The distance traveled round trip is 3.2 miles.

Lehigh Valley Bike Trail Map – Description

The Lehigh Valley Trail, which runs through the magnificent Finger Lakes region, is a well-loved treasure with a bright future. The 16.4-mile Trail meanders through picturesque scenery and lush vegetation; it connects to a number of other footpaths and is a part of the endeavor to establish a more extensive trail network in the region. Although the Trail can be completed on a road bike, hybrid or mountain bikes are more appropriate. The route follows what was once the Lehigh Valley Railroad corridor’s Route of the Black Diamond, so named for its function in moving anthracite coal from Buffalo to New York City. Even though the train ceased operations in the middle of the 1970s, the Trail’s nickname (it’s also known as the Black Diamond Trail) and rail history still contribute to its overall identity.

The route begins in Victor’s magnificent Lehigh Crossing Park at its eastern end. With plenty of parking, a fishing pond, a playing field, a picnic area, and seasonal restrooms, the 54-acre connects the Lehigh Valley Trail, Auburn Trail, and Trolley Trail. To point tourists on the proper path, helpful signs have been erected around the Park and on the remaining portion of the Trail. Users must proceed 0.8 miles on a stone-dust route in the direction of the west Auburn Trail intersection before coming to a railroad trestle bridge. You’ll reach Victor’s Old Dutch Road in 1.6 kilometers. On a parallel grass track, horses are allowed for the final 1.4 kilometers to Mendon. The Trail in Mendon passes several fields for young baseball players, restrooms, drinking fountains, a lightning shelter, and parking.

Make Sure to Get a Safe Ride

Carry water, a park map, and the appropriate footwear for any expedition, even on shorter paths. Cell phones are not a substitute for a paper map because they are unreliable in the jungle. For longer excursions, include energy-dense foods, more water, and clothing for shifting weather. For a more pleasurable experience, keep yourself well-fueled and hydrated. Think about these things before starting your next adventure: Path length, trail difficulty, and your group’s degree of fitness Most path lengths are one-way, according to the park map. To return to the beginning point, double the length of the Trail. Weather forecast: Be prepared by being aware of potential future weather. Sunset is the time when the Park shuts. Be sure to leave the Park before it gets dark. Have a backup plan, and be adaptable! It can occasionally be safer to choose a better day or an alternative trail.

Trail In Lehigh Valley Bike Trail Map

the towns of Rush and Mendon are responsible for maintaining the Lehigh Valley Trail (the neighbors to the north, The Henrietta Foundation, maintain the northernmost branch of the Trail.) More people enjoy the 16 miles of this route than all of our other properties put together. The Trail, however, is a component of the Monroe County Parks system and is owned by that county as opposed to our other sites. The Mendon Foundation has an agreement with Monroe County to support the Trail’s upkeep and to sponsor projects along its length. Boy Scouts and a committed and organized core of Mendon Foundation volunteers provide the majority of the Trail’s support. The Trail is maintained with a sizable portion of the money donated to us. You may have seen our growing display at Rochester Junction; we have additional improvements planned and would love for you to be a part of them.

How The Lehigh Valley Bike Trail Map Was Built

Bob King, the executive of Monroe Government, suggested that businesses from the private sector participate in county activities during the beginning of the 1990s. The Mendon Foundation was seeking programs to involve members while it was just getting started. Directors of the Mendon Foundation Jeanne Loberg and Dick Dehm requested that the Lehigh Valley railway bed be handed to the Mendon Foundation for the construction of a linear route during a meeting with the Monroe County Parks Director. Monroe County was unable to contribute the land because it was acquired using federal funding. The Mendon Foundation could build and maintain the route for the county under a written agreement, though. The Monroe County Executive Jack Doyle oversaw the approval of a contract in 1994. The trail project’s development and completion were aggressively pursued by the Foundation Directors and members beginning in 1995. The owner of RLB Planning Group, Ron Brand, contributed his experience and skills to the development of the proposal needed to get federal ISTEA funding. The proposal was turned down because New York State was awarded every grant dollar in that particular year. The historic Lehigh Valley train bed was converted into a linear park in October 1995 thanks to the Foundation’s first formal volunteer work party. To clear bushes, remove fallen and dead trees, and build a walking trail, a variety of equipment was employed, including chainsaws, weedwhackers, bobcats, bulldozers, and brush hogs. To create parking spaces near the Trail’s entrance, lands were removed. Shrubbery and shade trees were added to improve the expertly designed area. All of this served as the beginning of a significant expansion project.
