Copper Harbor Mountain Bike Trails

by Leave a Comment

Mountain biking – The Copper Harbor mountain bike trails are one of the best in the world, featuring some of the most unusual terrain and difficult routes in the nation, including more than 40 miles of singletrack trails.

In October 2012, the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) classified the Copper Harbor Mountain Bike Trails as a Silver Level Ride Center. With the installation of new Ride Centers since then, the Copper Harbor Trails, which were then between the top five trail systems in the world behind Park City, UT, and on par with Sun Valley, ID, Oak Ridge, OR, and Taupo, New Zealand, are now within the top twenty. In addition to Copper Harbor’s reputation as a mountain biker-friendly community with its resorts, motels, campgrounds, restaurants, bike shop, and brewpub, all conveniently located to/from the trails, points were awarded for Copper Harbor’s variety and between gateway, cross-country, flow, and gravity trails.

Creating A New Standard For Mountain Biking In The Midwest

Compared to anywhere else in the Midwest, the mountain biking in Copper Harbor is REAL mountain biking… If you’ve ever used the 900’ vertical drop on the adjacent Mount Bohemia to ski or snowboard, you know what we’re talking about! This Midwest mountain biking destination is home to a number of rocky, undulating ridges and valleys that are highlighted by natural wonders like old-growth forests, heritage, and geology, historic sites, nature preserves, pristine inland lakes and streams, mountain-top vistas, rugged Lake Superior shoreline. Keweenaw County also has a number of inland lakes and streams. With loads of climbs, difficult descents, berms, rustic bridges, and boardwalks, singletrack paths wind over bedrock, cobbled rock, rooty, hard-packed surfaces, and absolutely no sand. Some riders have dubbed it the BC of the Midwest due to the constant elevation variations that offer a riding experience akin to the Western.

Trails

You can anticipate some of the most enjoyable, challenging, and beautiful routes in the world when you visit the Copper Harbor Trails. Don’t just take our word for it; there’s a reason we’re an IMBA Silver Level Ride Center. Our trails are a great adventure because of their amazing panoramas, challenging terrain, incredible fun, and a community that is dedicated to making your trip north terrific. The Copper Harbor Trails, which are situated at the northernmost point of Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, are the ideal location for lovers of silent sports. The Copper Harbor Trails, which are tucked away from the bustle of daily life and combine thrilling singletrack with the Keweenaw Peninsula’s natural beauty, offer you the ideal trip. There aren’t many places that make it simpler to flee than the Keweenaw Peninsula’s backwoods. Nearly 40 miles of singletrack are offered by the Copper Harbor Trail system, which is surrounded by miles of untamed forestland punctuated with distinctive geological features that overlook Lake Superior. Our trails are open to all non-motorized, human-driven activities, including hiking, trail running, bird watching, rock hounding, berry picking, photography, skiing, snowshoeing, or virtually any activity powered by your own two feet (or hands!). At the same time, the majority are ideal for mountain biking. No horses are allowed. Many areas in the Copper Harbor region have access to trails.

Cycling On Copper Harbor Mountain Bike Trails

Our trails offer a wide range of riding opportunities, such as downhill tracks, flow trails, conventional cross-country, and gnarly technical options. Most of our trails fall under the intermediate category (blue square), and they range from fast-flowing routes like Garden Brook to traditional chunky courses like Ma Maki. Given our challenging terrain, it should come as no surprise that we have a large number of black diamond expert-level trails. Test your technical prowess on the incredibly difficult Paul’s Plunge or Red Trail, or get your big hits on Overflow and Flying Squirrel. Last but not least, we have recently increased the number of beginner-friendly trails for our less experienced and newer riders. While other alternatives at Fort Wilkins allow you to discover this history of the area from the comfort of your bike, the Back 9 Trails (Little Loon, Moose on the Loose, and Chipmunk Run) offer a few laps into the forest. In the coming years, more accessible routes will be built to connect these locations with others in the region.

Etiquette
We ask that you abide by a few straightforward regulations to make sure everyone has a safe and good experience while visiting Copper Harbor. This is done in an effort to keep our trails open to as many members of our community as possible. You can support us in keeping trail access open so that everyone can use our trails safely by participating in Showing Your Harbor Love.
The mountain bikers give way to the hikers.
Ride safely and within your limits.
Traffic moving upward has the right-of-way.
Be mindful of the environment and wildlife.
Manage your dog.
No motorized or horse-drawn vehicles.
Pay attention to signs and notices about trail closures.
Always prepare in advance.
Observe the traffic laws.
Be respectful and courteous.

Trails That Cross Country

Since it’s difficult to identify which paths are most well-known in Copper Harbor, we’ll begin our list alphabetically. Unsurprisingly, some of our initial trails were traditional XC routes that still excite (and test) riders today. These routes were constructed by hand and can be rather difficult. This group includes Blue Trail, Ma Maki, and Dza Beet, among others. Expect to encounter numerous roots, pebbles, flat corners, and dubious drainage options. Be careful not to be intimidated; they’re still a riot to ride on. The majority of these trials are Blue Square in complexity. However, Mango sometimes ventures into Black Diamond.

Descending Trails

Our expert-level downhill routes, Overflow and Citrus Tech, are among the system’s toughest tracks. You’ve probably seen footage of the Overflow ride if you’ve looked up the Copper Harbor Mountain Bike Trails on YouTube or seen coverage of one of our races. Only the most skilled riders should try the Gap Jump, a hallmark feature. Similarly, motorcyclists who are unprepared should be terrified of the line down the near cliff that is Man pants. Citrus Tech, with its more technical characteristics, is a similarly challenging obstacle that is only for expert riders. The double-black diamond trails you have back home are substantially smaller, weaker, and possibly unsafe compared to Overflow and Citrus Tech. Don’t claim that we failed to warn you.

Cycling On Mountains Copper Harbor Mountain Bike Trails, Michigan

Simply put, Copper Harbor offers the best riding in the entire state of Michigan. The trail network received an International Mountain Biking Association bronze-level ride center designation in 2011, and after the addition of new trails, it was raised to the silver level the following year.
Prior to that, the IMBA awarded Epic Ride status to a number of trails in 2009. Since then, a number of additional excellent routes have been added, and the Epic Ride loop is no longer as well-known as it once was. The names of some of the paths have also changed. However, you should still put this trip on your to-do list, and I suggest it as a terrific way to get acquainted with the Copper Harbor Trail System.
According to the maps, the Epic Ride now comprises the following trails, listed in no particular order: Blue Trail, Dza Beet – Sec 1, Here We Go – Sec 1, Ma Maki – Sec 2, Say Hello, Dza Beet – Sec 3, Dza Beet – Sec 4, De Deet – Sec 2, Red Trail, Mango, Garden Brook – Sec 1, Woody Woo – East, Woody Woo – West, Garden Brook – Sec3, Der We Went, Stairway to Heaven, Copper Harbor Loop, Ma Maki, Secs. 3 and 2.
Although this path is a little challenging, all trail junctions are clearly signposted. Several shops in the city, as well as the Fort Wilkins Store, also sell trail maps for $5. Although $5 may seem like a lot, there is no charge to use the trails, and every penny goes directly to the Copper Harbor Trails Club to support the development and upkeep of this fantastic trail network. I printed the trail list and rubber-tied it to the top tube of my bike because I didn’t want to constantly stop and consult the map.

Discover the Upper Peninsula’s Biking Trails In Copper Harbor.

Aaron Peterson, Upper Peninsula correspondent for Traverse Magazine, takes us on a bike ride along Copper Harbor’s famed bike routes and offers tons of advice for making the most of your trip. The new, curved trails at Copper Harbor are receiving a ton of praise from mountain bikers all across the country. Aaron Peterson, an adventurous reporter, photographer, and bike enthusiast, rides with the local trail wizard who helped the system become successful in order to verify the experience.
A few feet to the right and then shooting off into a gloomy free fall down the merciless slope of Brockway Mountain, pieces of dirt and gravel from the Copper Harbor On the Edge mountain bike route are ricocheting through the roulette wheel of my blurring spokes.
I chose the Copper Harbor riding because positive things had been reported there. The biking scene has an energy and a buzz that you can feel that makes it seem destined for greatness. It’s a sentiment I suppose Moab, Bend, or Whistler once experienced as the local scene was poised to become far less regional. One clever, reserved, and diligent man by the name of Aaron Rogers and the quickly expanding network of top-notch bike trails that he and the Copper Harbor Trails Club team are constructing appears to be the main sources of the hum that permeates this peaceful Lake Superior harbor town.

Tours By Mountain Bike

It goes without saying that we at Escape Adventures adore mountain riding. We have a natural desire to explore additional paths and places. When we discover something amazing, we simply must share it. A distinctive and exciting way to enjoy the outdoors is by mountain riding.
We have created our mountain bike tours with a variety of riders in mind. Many routes are appropriate for those with little to no mountain biking expertise, while others are designed expressly for more seasoned riders. The technical and fitness level of each excursion is assessed, and the specific trip itineraries offer further information on each trip. For those who need a boost, we now offer the option to use mountain bikes on some outings.

Cycling On Mountains In The Keweenaw

Welcome to the Midwest’s premier mountain riding region! From novice riders hoping for a picturesque ride through virgin pines and glades to experienced riders seeking a true challenge, the Keweenaw provides a large range of courses. The Copper Harbor IMBA Silver-Level Ride Center, which offers more than 37 miles of singletrack miles of untamed forest land punctuated with distinctive geological features overlooking Lake Superior, is Keweenaw’s most well-known attraction. Expert mountain bikers from all over the world travel to Copper Harbor to test their skills on these challenging, extremely technical routes. But only experienced riders should apply for the Keweenaw MTB scene. Singletrack paths with varied topography and beautiful views may be found at Swedetown Recreation Area, Michigan Tech, Churning Rapids. Or visit Adventure Mine, which is 45 minutes southwest of Houghton, and explore the hand-built challenging routes that wind through the abandoned mines.

Systems for Trail Biking

Riders of whole skill levels can enjoy the variety of gateway, cross-country, flow, and gravity trails at Copper Harbor Mountain Bike Trails Harbor’s IMBA Silver Level Ride Center. From anywhere in town, you can readily access more than 35 miles of trails, with the main trailheads being at the Copper Harbor Community Building and the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge. Nearby amenities include a bike shop, hotels, dining options, campgrounds, shops, and a microbrewery. Riders must be aware of and give way to hikers and trail runners on the trails because they are designated as human-powered pathways.

Riders will delight in picturesque high-point vistas over Lake Superior as they travel through routes that pass by old-growth forests, interior lakes and streams, and significant historical sites. Consider using the shuttle service offered by Keweenaw Adventure Company, which will transport riders and their bikes to the top of the trail network for descents of up to three miles each. A strategy used by many ski slopes, but with vans rather than a chairlift!
