Trailway Boyne Mountain Bike Trails Valley – Description
Although there have been plans for a route along the former Boyne City, Gaylord & Alpena Railroad since at least 2000, it has taken two decades for the trail to actually be built. The Petoskey Area, home of the Little Traverse Wheelway, now has an extra 6.3 miles of paved rail trail thanks to continuous citizen-led initiatives. On the historic railroad right-of-way that originally connected the two towns, the Boyne Valley Trailway runs between Boyne City and the Village of Boyne Falls. About a mile from the center of Boyne City, the route starts on East Main Street, close to the Municipal Airport. The trail then proceeds southeast along the railroad bed. The Boyne Mountain Resort property is entered by trail users after about 4.5 miles, and the path then curves around the Boyne Falls Airport to its terminus at US131 and Cherry Hill Road.
Trail In Boyne Valley
The 6.3-mile-long Boyne Mountain Bike Trails Valley Trailway connects Boyne City and Boyne Falls and is paved and non-motorized. A small group of locals first proposed the Boyne Valley Trail in 2000 as a way to connect Boyne Falls and Boyne City with Charlevoix via the Boyne City to Charlevoix Trail. Now, in 2020, all required funds and easements have led to the completion of a route connecting Boyne Falls facilities and the year-round Boyne Mountain Resort to Boyne City and then Charlevoix. Boyne Falls and Boyne City were connected by the Boyne City, Gaylord & Alpena Railroad, which has generally been followed by the trail since it was established by the Boyne Valley Trailway Committee.

Get on the chairlift to the Boyne Highlands Bike Park for a more difficult ride if you’re looking for one. Yes, this is the same chairlift used to transport skiers during the winter. This park has naturally carved trails with banked curves, heart-stopping jumps, and tiny sections requiring expert maneuvering. Expansion Of The Boyne Mountain Bike Trails Forest
The Boyne Forest Trail is a fantastic and distinctive local resource. The cycling park offers miles of riding and hiking routes through some of the most picturesque woods close to Walloon Lake and Boyne City to locals and visitors. The routes are prepared for backcountry skiing, snowshoeing, and winter riding throughout the winter. The mission of the Top of Michigan Mountain Bike Association (TOMMBA) is to expand on the trails already in the area and turn northern lower Michigan into a popular regional destination for outdoor enthusiasts, thereby boosting the local economy and providing more opportunities for locals to engage in outdoor recreation. The Boyne Forest Trail provides another recreation destination as a choice for the area’s outdoor enthusiasts thanks to its rolling terrain, natural charm, proximity to a fantastic variety of restaurants, pubs, shops, and waterfront, as well as the enthusiastic support of Evangeline Township and the Boyne City Community.
Developing New Trails
As a result of this plan, the area will gain roughly 3 miles of new, sustainably constructed trails that will be a popular trail system. States from all over the region will use this trail system for a variety of purposes. The brand-new trails will be expertly constructed with innovative features and sustainable design principles, and TOMMBA and our partners will actively promote them. Boyne City, a Michigan Main Street village, has a bustling downtown that is accessible via bike from Boyne Forest Trail. The GREEN trail on the following Bike Park trail plan is what this fundraising campaign aims to complete. It will be built to connect to the Boyne Forest Trails that are already there to the east and the new trailhead parking lot that is currently being built at the southwest corner of this property.
The Effect
For a variety of reasons, northern Lower Michigan is a popular region to visit and live in. Mountain bikers in the area are starting to take notice of our location. Many people already have a favorite trail system because it is where they first learned how to ride a mountain bike. Both children and adults have come to this well-known trail network to learn how to use bikes to enjoy the trails. We now have the chance to capitalize on this favorable position to develop the trail system’s next level. This attempt to expand will create a special bike park environment with entertaining attractions that will test the skills of novice mountain bikers and reward everyone with new adventures.
Riding In Boyne Mountain Bike Trails Highlands, Harbor Springs, And Petoskey
Home Base: Boyne Highlands
Boyne Highlands and bikes are a delicious combination because delicious adventures occasionally arise from odd combinations. The golf and ski resort offers some of the best mountain biking in Michigan, is surrounded by little-used two-lanes, and even has car-free bike routes close by. It’s all simple with the meals and lodging in the Highlands. Boyne Highlands is located right in the midst of Emmet County, a 460 square mile oasis with half of its area covered by water and some of the state’s best mountain, road, and rail-trail riding. There are also roads and trails that run along Lake Michigan’s coast or pass by inland lakes and rivers, as well as a 26-mile paved bike path that connects Harbor Springs and Charlevoix and is excellent for riders of all skill levels, including families with young children who are still using training wheels.
A Road Trip
The Stutsmanville Road/M-119 Loop is one of my favorite road rides in Emmet County; it’s a hard 35 miles! The North Western State Trail is flat and full of lakes for about 2.5 miles; park at Spring Lake Park off M119. Turn left off the path and onto North Conway Road in Conway, just beyond the Parks Place restaurant, which is known for its pancakes. From here, the ascent will soon start. To get to Stutsmanville Road after traveling for about 5 miles, turn left onto Brutus Road for 2.25 miles, then right onto Pleasant view Road for 1 mile. Although the vistas are magnificent, this is the real workout. After traveling about 9 miles west of Stutsmanville, turn left into the legendary M119 Tunnel of Trees, which will lead you to Harbor Springs. Along the trip, you’ll encounter many enjoyable downhills and beautiful views. The final 6 miles back to your car can be completed with a quick return journey down the Little Traverse Wheelway bike route after stopping downtown at the Stained Cup for coffee.
Rides on mountain bikes
It’s difficult to beat the cross-country trail network at Boyne Highlands Resort. There is a lot of climbing and descending on various terrain. There are many circuits to choose from, but my favorite is the two-mile Orange Loop, which begins with a roughly one-mile ascent. The longest available downhill segment is the tasty reward, though. Maps and details on the state of the trails are available at the Adventure Center.
Rides for Families
One or two stops on a bike journey are a good option because the family has young children. From Petoskey to Bay Harbor and back is one of our favorite family excursions with entertaining stops. Then, after leaving the car at the Latitude 45 bike shop, we pedal down to the water and turn left along the Little Traverse Wheelway. This trail section’s initial 1.5 miles of scenery are comparable to other well-known American coastal drives. East Park is where we stop initially (great bathroom break with the added bonus of a new play structure overlooking the Little Traverse Bay). Take a sharp left onto the paved bike route towards Bay Harbor as you descend toward the lake. This new route gives the ride a fantastic loop. When it seems as though the route has come to an end, don’t worry. Follow the low-traffic, slow-moving roadways along the sea to the Village of Bay Harbor, where you’ll find Galley Gourmet, our favorite meal stop along the route. We typically get a pizza (gluten-free options available!) and sit outside. We continue the loop on the way back to Petoskey by ascending to Bay Harbor’s main entrance (on a pizza-filled stomach, this can lead to some walking) and then turn left onto the Wheelway for a pleasant ride home.
Mountain Boyne
Take a map and head out on 32.5 miles of newly defined trails if you prefer authentic northern Michigan mountain riding routes. To start your circle at the top of Boyne Mountain, you can either ride your bike there or take a chairlift. There are several options available, ranging from rough mountain bike tracks to gentle downhill paths and paved roads. The mountain biking trail network has a number of loops with names like Stairway, Rootsville, Climb Time, Outback, Rock-N-Roll, and DJ’s Drop that are evocative of the terrain. To reduce unexpected events, these parts are also classified according to their level of difficulty. Enjoy the seven-mile paved loop mountain, which rounds the resort’s grounds and provides a picturesque outlook of nature, before heading back to the resort village if you prefer a more leisurely pace.
Boyne Mountain Bike Trails is a true biking destination because of its huge trail network and other adjacent routes. Within ten minutes of the resort are two bike-friendly access points to the North Country Trail, as well as provides stunning views of Little Traverse Bay and convenient access to the charming downtown areas of Charlevoix, Bay Harbor, Petoskey, Bay View, and Harbor Springs. In addition, our neighboring property Boyne Highlands Resort has a range of bicycling alternatives, including cross-country trails, meandering routes, and Michigan’s only lift-served bike park with berms, jumps, and stunt features.
Consider Taking a Few Fantastic Paved Bike Rides From Boyne Mountain
Both rides are enjoyable, and you can start your ride from the mountain’s front side. If you wanted to spread out the time for the bike rides, you could stay the night or just use their parking lot for a day ride. I decide to split up the rides over a few days and love riding up their chairlift in the early evening to get some beautiful views of the surrounding hill and dale landscape. In addition, I was able to see the new peak-to-peak pedestrian sky bridge that is being constructed between the tops of McLouth and Disciples Ridge and is scheduled to open in late September. It will be the longest timber-towered suspension bridge in the world, measuring 1,203 feet, or about a quarter of a mile, and rising 118 feet above the ground to provide sweeping vistas of the valley. Local lumber is being used. I’m looking forward to walking across it in the fall. Recently opened, the Boyne Valley Trailway provides a beautiful ride across the countryside. The majority of it is off of roadways. A gorgeous connector trail on the mountain joins the railway after it leaves Boyne Falls, and it is just over six miles one way.
You genuinely believe that you are traveling through a rural area. The Boyne River is likely to run through this steep valley on the north side of the route for a few miles as it flows toward Lake Charlevoix in Boyne City, which is about halfway to the city. You descend towards Boyne City as you get closer, and that’s where you encounter your first traffic lights and road crossings. I had fun pedaling through the old town, which comes to life in the summer in the late afternoon and early evening with people and music. At Boyne Mountain, the seven-mile picturesque cart path snakes up along the golf course and back over the ski hill to where it comes out in the town. From the village, you may take the Mountain Pass Road over the top and down to the golf course area and Beach House on Deer Lake.
