History

The undeveloped southern area of the long-gone Naval Air Station Miami is now a regional park in Miami-Dade County. It was never an airport and never a part of Miami Municipal Airport, which belonged to the City of Miami and was located in Hialeah on the east side of LeJeune Road and South of NW 119th Street (E. 65th Street). In 1937, Amelia Earhart’s final flight on her tragic round-the-world voyage departed from Miami Municipal Airport for San Juan, PR, and from there, it headed south and over the Atlantic to Africa. Amelia Earhart Field replaced Miami Municipal Airport as the official name in October 1947. The U.S. Marine Corps relocated from Master Field, a sizable airport on NW 27th Avenue, east of Amelia Earhart Field when the Navy ceased operations at Naval Air Station Miami. Before the Marines closed it down, Marine Corps Air Station Miami had only been in operation for a short while. The General Service Administration of the federal government was then tasked with selling the land, and they accepted a bid from Dade County to purchase the air station’s current airport facilities, with the exception of a section set aside for the U.S. Coast Guard’s Air Station Miami. Due to the name of the community just east of the airfield, the county gave the airport the name Opa-locka Airport.
