Basketball MVP Camp’s
The MVP Camp purpose was born out of the conviction that it was becoming more and more difficult for kids from diverse socioeconomic levels to interact and enjoy an experience together in our increasingly polarized society. At this camp, “MVP” stands for “Most Valued Person” instead of “Most Valuable Player” because there is so much more to basketball and, by extension, to life than just being the top scorer. In order to maximize each camper’s unique abilities, MVP Camp employs basketball to teach goal-setting, fair play, leadership, perseverance, and hard work.
All indications point to MVP Basketball Camp’s success in fostering these traits. There are a ton of parent and camper testimonials, and over the years, there have been a ton of articles extolling the special charms of MVP in publications like the New York Times, The Journal News, and the Scarsdale Inquirer. When naming MVP the “Best Sports Camp in Westchester” in 2013, Westchester Magazine stated, “For kids, MVP is about nonstop fun, fantastic exercise, and wonderful new friends.” The promise of MVP Basketball Camp’s founder Stan Greene’s favorite saying, “The world may be better for the reason that you were important in the life of a child,” has been realized in large part because of its excellent teachers and guest lecturers.
Additionally, MVP Camp has been proactive in meeting a variety of community needs since they feel that under-resourced youngsters from the region’s least affluent communities are not the only ones who deserve scholarship assistance. In the rouse of the World Trade Center catastrophe, MVP and the New York City Fire Commissioner established the “Firefighter’s Fund,” a program that allowed family members of firefighters killed on 9/11 to attend camp on a full scholarship. Hoops for Troops, a new MVP initiative that gives family members of service members access to MVP free of charge, was launched in 2005. In order to provide chances for the kids of veterans who have been wounded in battle, Hoops for Troops and the Wounded Warrior Project partnered in 2009.
With proclamations from both County Executive Bob Astorino and White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach, MVP Basketball Camp celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2019. MVP is appreciative of the strong community support as well as its outstanding coaching staff and diligent administrative team. To maintain Stan Greene’s legacy, MVP keeps up a persistent effort.
