Trail of Paint Creek

The 8.9-mile Paint Creek Bike Trail Map is a linear park owned and operated by the Paint Creek Trailways Commission (PCTC) and is situated in northeastern Oakland County. Since it was converted from the former Penn Central Railroad to a trail, it was the first Rail-to-Trail in the State of Michigan. The 1.5-mile Paint Creek Trail in Rochester Hills has picnic tables and a fine-limestone surface. The Trail is ideal for biking and observing wildlife.

Guide to Paint Creek State Park

Paint Creek Bike Trail Map State Park, located in Ohio’s Paint Creek Valley, offers year-round fun for the whole family, so bring your RV. It has winding roads, hilly valleys, and stunning scenery because it is situated on the edge of the Appalachian Plateau. For a very long time, tourists who appreciate fishing and the outdoors have called Paint Creek State Park home.

Shawnee Indians were there before settlers arrived, but they were eventually pushed off their land by settlers. As settlers attempted to construct homes and towns on the once-inhabited Indian territory, there were several altercations between the two groups.

Paint Creek Trail Information (MI)

Despite being Michigan’s oldest non-motorized rail trail, the Paint Creek Trail often receives updates and upgrades to keep it looking fresh. The 8.9-mile crushed-limestone route, which was built in 1983, travels beside Paint Creek through a mostly wooded corridor between Rochester and Lake Orion. Additionally, it is a section of the 2,000+ mile Iron Belle Trail, which connects Ironwood in the Upper Peninsula to Detroit by various hiking and bike paths.

Numerous species of animals, historical landmarks, rest areas, and a creek stocked with trout that the Trail passes 12 times are just a few of the Trail’s many attractions. At the trailheads, where you can also get folding maps, notices and maps are placed. Mileage markers that were left over from the time this route was a railway indicate how far it was until Detroit. At the Rochester, Tienken Road, and Goodison trailheads are free bike repair facilities.
The Trail follows an old section of the 1872-established Detroit and Bay City Railroad. Following the Michigan Central and New York Central Railroads, the Penn Central Railroad took over the operation of the trains between Detroit and Mackinaw City in 1968. In 1983, the railroad sold the rail bed to a commission of trial advocates and nearby communities after emerging from bankruptcy. In order to preserve a rural atmosphere, the commission chose crushed limestone over asphalt to surface the 8-foot-wide Trail in the early 1990s.

You’ll start in Lake Orion and go to Rochester on a scarcely detectable incline. Lake Orion was initially developed around a sawmill constructed in 1825 before becoming a vacation spot. The location of the water-powered Carpenter Rudd Mill, which stood there until 1926, is marked by a historical marker two miles to the south. Additionally, from here, you may access the Bald Mountain State Recreation Area for mountain biking, swimming, and fishing. Paint Creek meanders beside and crosses the route for the next few miles, offering numerous opportunities for fishing. A bow and arrow range is located around mile 2.5 if you want to give it a shot. In 0.5 miles, you must cross the busy Adams Road with caution.

Ride At Paint Creek Bike Trail Map

This ride can be begun as stated from either the Tennessee or North Carolina side. Between Paint Mountain Trail #7 and Chimney Rocks, parking was available on Weavers Bend Road. Chimney Rocks #154 is a steep, rutted path that is fun to descend but is better as a hard ascent with some hike-a-bike incorporated in this loop. To see the French Broad River and, on clear days, the mountains beyond, climb to the Paint Rock Trail crossing and gaze to the right.

Riding down the mountain on a steep downhill route that hugs the mountain’s contours with a few jumps and berms leads to a thrilling drop that ends too soon at Paint Mountain Road. Turn right and continue down the mountain. Turn left and continue up the road for a steady climb all the way to Lone Pine Gap, passing and noting a gated doubletrack about two miles up on the left. About 15 miles into the ride, turn right onto Cummins Branch Road #54B for a climb to the top of Paint Mountain. Approximately three miles from the Paint Rock Trail’s terminus and a mile past the gated doubletrack, proceed up Paint Mountain Road #54 to Lone Pine Gap, as previously mentioned.

Trail Of Paint Creek

A nature lover’s paradise, Paint Creek Trail was Michigan’s first rail trail. It meanders through fields, prairies, woods, and marshes as it follows Paint Creek. In the Detroit area, Paint Creek is the main remaining cold-water designated trout stream. It is home to several games and nongame birds, frogs, snakes, and toads. The Trailways is a naturalized corridor where fox, squirrel, rabbit, raccoon, quail, pheasant, and forest birds can be found. It’s common to see white-tailed deer in the early morning or around dusk. It was purchased in 1983, and in 1990 crushed limestone was added. To preserve the natural environment, crushed limestone was chosen rather than asphalt. Serving a large population of 128,000, this 8 ft wide, all-weather surface is perfect for many activities like hiking, strolling, skiing, and horseback riding. The Trail Commission recently restored a 1.3-acre natural prairie to honor the endeavor, and it produced an educational movie and a work of cultural art. Numerous indigenous species, such as Big Blue Stem and Wild Lupine, can be found at our prairie site.

The large Oakland Path Network, which will eventually have 212 miles of Trail, includes the Paint Creek Trail as a crucial component. The Macomb Orchard Trail and the Clinton River Trail are two noteworthy linkages. The Polly Ann Trail will be our next point of connection. Our Trail continues through the 4,637-acre state park Bald Mountain Recreation Area, which has a substantial trail network. Along the path, there are many historical sites. Native Americans may have been present in the region and used Paint Creek as a route for travel, according to historians. The Paint Creek and Goodison Cider Mills are situated in the unincorporated Village of Goodison, just a short stroll from the route. The Carpenter-Rudd Mill Site in Orion Township is next to a trail and Bald Mountain. All users’ lives are made better by our design, collaborations, connections, and resources that are easily available.
